On 22 May 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Mexican leaders concluded the 8th EU-Mexico Summit in Mexico City, signing the Modernised Global Agreement and an Interim Trade Agreement (ITA). The agreements update the 2000 Global Agreement, aiming to deepen political dialogue, boost trade and investment, and enhance cooperation on strategic sectors such as sustainable infrastructure, energy transition, and digital economy.
The summit marks a new chapter in the strategic partnership, building on 25 years of economic integration that has seen bilateral trade quadruple. The modernised agreement includes a Joint Declaration on Trade and Gender Equality and commits both sides to strengthen supply chains and economic security. The leaders also launched a High-Level Dialogue on Security and Migration and a Strategic Policy Dialogue to coordinate on bilateral, regional, and global challenges.
In the joint statement, the EU and Mexico reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, with the UN at its core, and expressed concern over geopolitical tensions. They supported a just peace in Ukraine and upheld international humanitarian principles. The summit also advanced the EU-LAC Global Gateway Investment Agenda, focusing on sustainable infrastructure, green corridors, and digital cooperation, and welcomed Mexico's accession to the Enterprise Europe Network.
Both sides agreed to relaunch the EU-Mexico Digital Dialogue and strengthen cooperation on climate action, circular economy, and health, including a new Sectoral Dialogue on Health. They also committed to promoting the Franco-Mexican initiative to regulate the veto in case of mass atrocities and to reforming the international financial architecture. The next summit is scheduled for 2028.
