The Council of the European Union has renewed its economic sanctions against Russia for a further 12 months, until 31 July 2027, in response to Russia's continuing war of aggression against Ukraine. The decision, adopted on 25 June 2026, follows the European Council meeting of 18-19 June 2026, where EU leaders agreed to extend the measures. The sanctions, first introduced in 2014 and significantly expanded since February 2022, cover trade, finance, energy, dual-use technology, a ban on seaborne crude oil imports, transaction bans on financial institutions and crypto service providers, and suspension of Kremlin-backed disinformation outlets. The EU also has measures to counter circumvention. The Council stated it stands ready to take additional measures as long as Russia continues its illegal actions. The renewal comes amid calls from the European Council to further increase pressure on Russia, including reducing energy revenues, curbing shadow fleet operations, and constraining its banking system, and urged swift adoption of a 21st sanctions package. Since February 2022, the EU has adopted 20 sanctions packages. The EU continues to provide comprehensive support to Ukraine and supports diplomatic efforts for peace.
