EU High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas visited Addis Ababa on 15 July, meeting with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos to reaffirm the EU-Ethiopia partnership and explore deeper cooperation on shared priorities. The visit also included discussions with members of EuroCham Ethiopia on promoting trade, investment, and the Global Gateway initiative, as well as engagement with EU delegation staff and a cultural visit to Unity Park.
The visit marks Kallas's first to Ethiopia since taking office, underscoring the EU's commitment to strengthening ties with the country. Ethiopia is a key partner for the EU in the Horn of Africa, with cooperation spanning development, peace and security, and economic growth. The meetings with Prime Minister Abiy and Foreign Minister Gedion focused on areas such as regional stability, sustainable development, and the implementation of the Pretoria peace agreement. The engagement with European businesses highlighted opportunities for EU investment in Ethiopia, particularly in infrastructure, energy, and digital sectors under the Global Gateway strategy.
The visit also served to reinforce EU support for Ethiopia's reform agenda and its role in promoting peace in the region. No new announcements or concrete measures were made during the visit, which was primarily diplomatic in nature.
