MEP Regina Doherty (PPE) has asked the European Commission to provide a detailed update on the implementation of the European care strategy, adopted in September 2022, as it approaches its fourth anniversary. In a parliamentary question submitted on 10 July 2026, Doherty seeks concrete information on progress made, Member States' uptake of recommendations, achievements, and remaining challenges in reaching the strategy's original objectives.

The question highlights the strategy's goals to improve availability, affordability, and quality of care services, strengthen working conditions and rights of formal and informal carers, and boost investment in the sector. Doherty emphasises the strategy's continued importance for citizen well-being and societal resilience, particularly given an ageing population and persistent staff shortages across the care sector.

The MEP's question does not set specific numerical targets or deadlines but requests a clear and updated account of implementation. It reflects a policy orientation focused on accountability and ensuring that the strategy's ambitions are being realised. The Commission is expected to reply within approximately six weeks; its answer will signal the current state of play and any policy adjustments ahead.

EU citizens relying on care services, formal and informal carers, national authorities responsible for implementing recommendations, and care sector employers facing staff shortages. The Commission's response will clarify whether the strategy has delivered on its promises or requires renewed efforts.
