The Council of the European Union has been asked to appoint Torsten Welling as a German member of the Committee of the Regions for the remainder of the eighth term (2025-2030), replacing Heike Raab who resigned effective 18 May 2026. The nomination, submitted by the German Federal Government via a cover note from Ambassador Thomas Ossowski dated 7 July 2026, proposes Welling, who serves as State Secretary for Europe, Sport, Volunteering and Media and Representative to the Federal Government in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The Rhineland-Palatinate State Parliament nominated him on 17 June 2026. The appointment procedure is to be initiated by Secretary-General Thérèse Blanchet. The change affects the German delegation to the EU's advisory body on regional and local matters, with Welling set to serve until the end of the current term in 2030.
