The Innovative Advanced Materials for Europe (IAM‑I) partnership is hosting the Battery Materials and Processing Conference on 27–28 May 2026 in Stockholm, Sweden. The event brings together experts, researchers and industry leaders to explore advances in battery materials, processing and energy storage technology, covering the full value chain from raw materials to recycling.
The conference comes amid a broader EU push to strengthen the battery sector. On 16 December 2025, Executive Vice-President Stéphane Séjourné unveiled an automotive package that included a Battery Booster initiative, securing €1.5 billion in zero-interest loans and €300 million for critical raw materials access to support gigafactories and innovation. The package aims to reduce strategic dependencies and bolster the EU battery industry.
Meanwhile, the European Commission has been tightening oversight on battery waste. On 10 April 2026, Commissioner Roxana Mînzatu affirmed producers' obligations under the WEEE Directive and Batteries Regulation for managing discarded e-scooters, highlighting gaps in compliance and monitoring. The WEEE Directive requires producer-funded collection and treatment of electronic waste, with registration and reporting obligations in each Member State.
In a related development, BASF Coatings’ Eco Impact Assessment tool, certified by TÜV Rheinland, has been expanding globally since 2025 to help body shops measure environmental performance, including battery-related waste streams. The tool uses life-cycle measurement to evaluate material and energy flows, supporting sustainability decisions.
The Stockholm conference will address safety, recycling and reuse as central themes, aligning with EU priorities on circular economy and sustainable battery production. Participants from academia, industry and research organisations will engage in sessions on sustainable practices, materials innovation and emerging technologies.
