MEP Ioan-Rareş Bogdan (PPE) has asked the EU's foreign policy chief to clarify whether a German diplomat's questioning of the ethnic identity of Romanians and Moldovans reflects the official position of the European External Action Service (EEAS). In a written parliamentary question dated 15 July 2026, Bogdan warned that such statements risk undermining Moldova's EU accession path by validating Russian disinformation narratives.
The MEP specifically asks whether the remarks by the German Ambassador to Moldova represent an individual deviation from diplomatic neutrality or the EEAS's official view. He argues that reviving artificial identity theories, promoted by Soviet propaganda to justify territorial fragmentation, directly contradicts EU efforts to integrate Moldova. Bogdan notes that over 1.3 million Moldovan citizens already hold Romanian citizenship and that harmonisation of the acquis is unifying the legal, economic, and energy space on both sides of the Prut River.
The question seeks to ensure consistency in Europe's message in a strategically important region. Under EU rules, the High Representative is expected to reply within approximately six weeks, and the answer will signal whether the EEAS distances itself from the ambassador's comments or endorses them. The issue touches on EU-Moldova relations, countering disinformation, and the bloc's stance on historical narratives in its eastern neighbourhood.
