Commissioner Michael McGrath has indicated that the European Commission may revise its guidelines on political advertising transparency to reflect lessons from recent elections, but has not yet estimated compliance costs for political actors. In a written answer to a parliamentary question from Regina Doherty (EPP), McGrath confirmed that the guidelines, issued in October 2025 under Regulation (EU) 2024/900, include practical guidance for sponsors and providers of political advertising services. The Commission may update them based on implementation experience, including from recent elections. McGrath noted that the Commission supports a network of national competent authorities and has set up an expert group with advertising service providers. However, he did not provide a timeline for guideline updates or a cost estimate, leaving those questions open. The answer signals a cautious, iterative approach to enforcement rather than immediate regulatory tightening.
