On 3 July 2026, the European Commission proposed the identification of five European Defence Projects of Common Interest (EDPCIs) under the EDIP Regulation, marking the first implementation of this new instrument to boost collaborative defence industrial projects. The selected projects cover drones and counter-drone systems, integrated maritime and seabed defence, space capabilities, integrated air and missile defence, and Eastern flank surveillance. They were chosen from nine Member State submissions based on maturity, clarity, and potential to strengthen the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base.
The EDPCIs aim to enhance EU defence readiness by fostering collaborative development and procurement, scaling industrial capacities, and improving interoperability and standardisation among participating Member States. The Council is now called to adopt the implementing decision, which will make participating Member States eligible for dedicated EU funding under the EDIP Work Programme.
The proposal represents a significant step in EU defence industrial policy, with implications for several stakeholders. Participating Member States will gain access to EU funding and benefit from collaborative development, potentially reducing costs and improving capabilities. Defence industry contractors involved in the selected projects stand to receive new contracts and investment, boosting their competitiveness. Non-participating Member States may face a competitive disadvantage in defence industrial development. EU taxpayers will see increased spending on defence, but with the expectation of enhanced collective security and reduced duplication.
The Commission's proposal now awaits Council adoption. The European Parliament will be informed of the decision, and the EDIP Work Programme will allocate specific funding for the selected projects.
