- 2026-03-11 “Answer given by President von der Leyen on behalf of the European Commission 22.5.2026 Written question Allegations of cooperation between Marta Kos and the former Yugoslav secret service were raised during the European Parliament’s hearing with the then Commissioner-Designate, prior to the European Parliament’s vote on the appointment of the Commission. In the hearing, the Commissioner-Designate rejected these allegations, stating that she had never been an informant or worked for the Yugoslav secret service. She has confirmed her position in this matter in the context of the Honourable Member’s question [1] . The Commission has no reason to revisit the issue that was addressed in the European Parliament’s thorough vetting process of the candidates who were subsequently appointed as Members of the Commission 2024-2029. [1] Cf pages 33/34 of the verbatim of 7 November 2024 of Commissioner-Designate Marta Kos’ hearing with the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.”

- “Thank you very much. Today's reality is not the same reality. We'll have three years down the line or further ahead, so we have to plan responsibly. European funds are there to iron out the disparities between the regions. Contributors are those who pay into the budget and the money has to go to them. But there's a weakness that is the administration. We don't need more obstacles. We need simplification. I would like to see a budget that didn't have preconditions, but with checks, so that fraud is made impossible. I'm rapporteur on the envy opinion, and I'm very concerned about the way the funds have been put together and the consequences for unpaid Paid appropriations, but I'm happy that we haven't forgotten geography in this document.”

- “Thank you very much. We're talking about the 2027 budget guidelines today, and we don't really know what's going to happen tomorrow in the future. Given the instability in the world, it seems that there's never enough money. And that's why this budget needs to be very sensible and well planned. There are two things I wanted to mention. Firstly, transparency NGOs who receive resources from this budget, while at the same time they are involved in election campaigns. If we want to keep people onside, then we need to show that we can be transparent. The social fund should not be used on abortion. This is a fund that is intended for the most vulnerable people children with diseases, mental health. It shouldn't be used to finance abortion tourism. These rules should not be mixed with the prerogatives of the member states.”
Regulation of NGOs in Europe
- “Thank you. Distinguished, ladies and gentlemen, we are facing not just economic and climate challenges, but also social in the Employment Committee. We want to see decisive support, uh, budgetary support to social policies, to deal with child poverty, mental health of employees, ageing, uh, population disparities between regions, increasing living costs. Cause all this is not exceptional, but it is everyday life for millions of Europeans. And all these challenges have to be addressed with sufficient financial measures. Europe cannot make steps ahead without supporting its people. Europe has to be the area of best social models, and the budget for 26 should be the instrument to put to this purpose.”
EU expenditure on social policy
- “Thank you very much for giving me the floor. I will be speaking in Slovene, my mother tongue. First of all, I would like to thank Niels King, who has really promoted this issue, also in the framework of our committee. I would also like to thank all speakers who have actually displayed all situations when it comes to demography, I know that it is a very complex issue. It is actually covering our birth and our death. It is a complex issue. This is why our approach needs to be a complex one, and it also needs to be mainstreamed into all of our policies. Today we have focused mostly on the labor market. How are we going to encourage women to be more active in the labor market? How can we facilitate their access to it? I do agree that our policies are important. However, I also believe that we need to address the key issue of demographic trends, which is that there is a low natality and our population is aging. In other words, what we need is to promote family life, To promote a higher mortality rate in Slovenia. And it's not all about money. It's also about our way of life and about our culture. Now, I would actually move on to another part of our lives, and that is retirement, I know that. Our pensions need to also be adequate. However, we have seen that our older people are facing existential issues because of lower pensions, and we do have also an institute of minimum wage. And I also believe that by analogy, we would also need to have a minimum pension in the EU or some safeguards that would allow us to remind member states to put their house in order.”
