Foreign Policy, Security & Development Cooperation · Foreign affairs · Statement/Declaration · 2026-06-12

The European Union and Jordan reviewed progress in implementing their Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership during the 14th meeting of the EU-Jordan Association Committee, held on 10 June 2026 in Amman. The meeting was co-chaired by Rosamaria Gili, Deputy Managing Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the European External Action Service (EEAS), and Omar Fanek, Secretary General of Jordan's Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation. The two sides discussed political, economic, and security cooperation, expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and reaffirmed commitments to international law and regional stability.

The meeting took place under the framework of the EU-Jordan Association Agreement and built on the Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership signed on 29 January 2025, as well as the first EU-Jordan Leaders' Summit of 8 January 2026. The EU reiterated its support for Jordan's role in regional stability, its humanitarian efforts in Gaza and the West Bank, and its hosting of Syrian refugees. Both sides reaffirmed the need for immediate, sustainable, and unconditional delivery of humanitarian and medical aid to Gaza.

Review of Jordan's modernisation agenda and economic cooperation
The discussions covered Jordan's three-pronged modernisation agenda, which includes structural reforms, human capital development, green transition, and private sector development. Both sides look forward to the EU-Jordan Investment Conference to be held in Jordan before the end of 2026. The EU also reaffirmed its substantial support to the Jordanian Armed Forces through the European Peace Facility and pledged to deepen cooperation against organised crime and illicit trade.

Security and defence cooperation
In the security domain, the EU and Jordan underlined their commitment to build on the successful EU-Jordan Security and Defence Dialogue of 4 February 2026. Areas of shared interest include countering terrorism and violent extremism, maritime security in the Red Sea, and cooperation in multilateral fora.

Preparations for the Association Council
The meeting prepared the ground for the upcoming 16th Meeting of the EU-Jordan Association Council, to be held in Brussels. No date for that meeting was announced.

Stakeholder impact
The review of the partnership has moderate positive impact on Jordan's government and economy, as it unlocks continued EU financial and technical support for reforms and investment. EU foreign policy and humanitarian objectives benefit from Jordan's stabilising role in the region. Jordanian host communities and Syrian refugees stand to gain from sustained EU humanitarian aid. However, no new financial commitments or concrete measures were announced, limiting immediate material impact.
