On 31 July 2026, the European Union Delegation to Cambodia and the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport co-hosted a ceremony in Phnom Penh to send off 23 Cambodian scholars who will pursue master's and specialised degrees in water management, energy, digital technology, and joint master's programmes across Europe. The event, held at Novotel Phnom Penh, was led by EU Ambassador Igor Driesmans and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sport Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, with Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation Hem Vanndy and representatives from the Ministry of Mines and Energy also in attendance. The scholarships are funded under the EU's Global Gateway strategy, which aims to support sustainable development through investment in education and skills.
The cohort includes 9 scholars under Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees, 5 under Global Gateway Scholarships for Water Professions, 7 pursuing Energy Dual Degrees, and 2 under European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Digital Scholarships. The ceremony drew over 150 participants, including more than 80 Erasmus+ alumni, EU Member State representatives, and European business leaders. Ambassador Driesmans stressed that investing in young people and education is essential for long-term development, adding that the awardees will gain skills critical for Cambodia's growth and open high-value career paths, including opportunities with European businesses operating in Cambodia. The evening also marked the introduction of the new leadership board of the Erasmus Mundus Alumni Association of Cambodia (EMA-Cam), underscoring the role of past graduates in sustaining EU-Cambodia educational ties.
