The European Union has awarded 23 Cambodian scholars master's and specialized degrees in water management, energy, digital technology, and joint programmes, with a pre-departure ceremony held in Phnom Penh on 31 July 2026. EU Ambassador to Cambodia Igor Driesmans co-hosted the event with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sport Hang Chuon Naron, alongside Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation Hem Vanndy and representatives from the Ministry of Mines and Energy. The scholarships, supported under the EU's Global Gateway strategy, include 9 Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees, 5 Global Gateway Scholarships for Water Professions, 7 Energy Dual Degrees, and 2 European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Digital Scholarships.
The ceremony, held at Novotel Phnom Penh, brought together over 150 participants, including more than 80 Erasmus+ alumni, EU Member States representatives, and European business leaders. Ambassador Driesmans emphasized that investing in young people and education is essential for long-term development, stating that the scholarships represent the EU's commitment to strengthening Cambodia's skilled workforce and building lasting connections between the regions. He noted that awardees will gain skills essential for the country's growth, opening high-value career paths, including opportunities with European businesses operating in Cambodia. The event also marked the official introduction of the new leadership board for the Erasmus Mundus Alumni Association of Cambodia (EMA-Cam), highlighting the active role past graduates play in maintaining strong relations.
The scholarships target practical growth fields aligned with Cambodia's development needs, particularly in sectors where skilled professionals are in demand. The water professions scholarships address challenges in water management, while the energy dual degrees support the country's energy sector transition. The digital scholarships aim to boost technological capacity. These investments are expected to benefit Cambodian students and professionals by providing access to European higher education and training, enhancing their career prospects. European businesses in Cambodia may gain access to a more skilled local workforce, while EU institutions strengthen educational and economic ties with the region. The initiative also supports Cambodia's long-term development goals by building local expertise in critical sectors, though the immediate impact on the broader population remains indirect, as the benefits will materialize as scholars return and apply their skills. The EU Delegation in Cambodia continues to manage the programme, with further cohorts expected under the Global Gateway framework.
