The European Union has awarded 55 Ethiopian students fully funded Erasmus Mundus scholarships for the 2025–2026 academic year, enabling them to pursue Master's degrees at university consortia across 12 European countries. The scholarships, announced by the EU Delegation to Ethiopia on 31 July 2026, mark the continuation of a programme that has supported more than 600 Ethiopian students since 2010, making Ethiopia one of the leading African recipients of Erasmus Mundus awards.
The announcement follows a Pre-Departure Networking Event held at the EU Delegation Office in Addis Ababa on 28 July 2026, where the scholarship recipients met with EU Deputy Head of Mission Agnieszka Karpinska and representatives of EU Member State embassies. During the event, students received practical guidance on travel arrangements, visa procedures, studying and living in Europe, and adapting to their new academic environment. The gathering also offered an opportunity for the scholars to connect with fellow Erasmus Mundus recipients and begin building professional networks before departing.
The scholarships are part of the EU's broader engagement with Ethiopia in higher education and youth empowerment, reflecting a partnership that has grown steadily over the past decade and a half. The EU Delegation described the achievement as a demonstration of the talent and academic excellence of Ethiopian students, as well as the strength of EU–Ethiopia cooperation in education and international exchange.
For the students, the scholarships provide access to European universities and cross-cultural academic experiences, with the potential to enhance their career prospects and contribute to Ethiopia's development upon return.
