A corrigendum published by the Council of the European Union on 6 July 2026 corrects two errors in the German language version of Directive (EU) 2016/798 on railway safety (recast). The corrections affect Recital 3 and Article 2(3)(c) and (d) of the directive, which sets common safety requirements for the EU railway system.

In Recital 3, the corrigendum replaces the phrase "kommunalen technischen Anforderungen" (municipal technical requirements) with "lokalen technischen Anforderungen" (local technical requirements) and substitutes "leichte Eisenbahnsysteme" (light railway systems) with "Stadtbahnsysteme" (urban rail systems). In Article 2(3)(c) and (d), the word "schweren" (heavy) is removed before "Eisenbahnfahrzeugen" (railway vehicles) in both subparagraphs. The corrections were made under Procedure 2(b), which applies to obvious errors in a single language version. Member states have eight days to submit observations to the Council's Directorate Quality of Legislation (dql.rectificatifs@consilium.europa.eu).

The corrigendum ensures that the German text aligns with the intended scope of the directive, which covers all railway vehicles and local technical requirements rather than limiting them to heavy or municipal systems. This technical correction has no impact on the substance of the directive but clarifies the legal text for German-speaking users, including national authorities, railway operators, and manufacturers. The directive itself, adopted on 11 May 2016, recast previous railway safety legislation to harmonise safety certification and accident investigation across the EU.
