- 2026-06-18 “End recruitment of children by organised crime — End recruitment of children by…
Drug trafficking, money laundering, children paid to commit violence - this happens to children as young as 12 years old in the EU. We have to prevent and end it. We welcome today’s adoption of a resolution to end the recruitment of children by organised crime. The new position of the EU parliament demands to impose prevention measures first, and enforce EU legislation online. “Europe's priority must be crystal clear: hunt down the recruiters, dismantle the criminal networks, and help exploited children instead of treating them as the masterminds of organised crime," said RenewMEP Hilde Vautmans after the vote.
The resolution calls for joint Europol and Eurojust investigations targeting the recruiters and network leaders. Its aim is simple -to stop criminal gangs from recruiting children, shut down the networks behind it, and make sure every exploited child is protected.
With concrete measures, the EU parliament urges the EU commission to: address the recruitment of children in the upcoming organised crime legislation; to ensure full enforcement of the Digital Services Act against platforms used to recruit minors, and use the Digital Fairness Act to close remaining gaps. It also calls to scale up existing evidence-based prevention models like EU-UNODC Protecting Futures programme, proven effective across fragile and conflict-affected contexts. The concrete measures are:
Include child recruitment as a priority in the upcoming EU Action Plan on the Protection of Children against Crime.
Add aggravating circumstances for child recruitment in the upcoming revision of organised crime rules.
Intensify Europol and Eurojust cooperation in ports and logistics hubs, where children are systematically exploited by criminal networks.
Revise the Pyrotechnics Directive: fireworks are now used as weapons by criminal gangs recruiting children.
Fund and strengthen the 116 000 missing children hotline network -frontline partners in identifying children at risk and connecting them to protection services.
“Organised crime has declared war on our children. While gang leaders hide in the shadows, they recruit children as young as 12 to do their dirty work. Minors are now involved in more than 70% of illegal market activities, fuelled by 821 high-risk criminal networks operating across Europe. Every time an exploited child ends up in court while the gang leader walks free, organised crime wins. “ Hilde Vautmans Renew Europe MEP, Belgium, Anders
The new position of the parliament comes after Europol launched Operational Task Force GRIMM in April 2025 to coordinate with tech companies on detecting online recruitment of children. Liberals and Democrats continuously work to ensure that human rights and dignity are upheld, children are protected, and legislation is enforced.”
- 2026-06-17 “Parliament gives final green light to new genomic techniques legislation — Parliament gives final green light…
The European Parliament today gave its green light to new rules on plants obtained through new genomic techniques (NGTs), creating a science-based framework that will help farmers develop more resilient crops, strengthen food security and support innovation across Europe's agrifood sector.
The legislation establishes a clear and proportionate regulatory framework for new genomic techniques, enabling the development of crop varieties that are more resistant to drought, pests and plant diseases while helping to reduce the use of pesticides and other inputs.
Pascal Canfin MEP, Renew Europe shadow rapporteur, said:
"We have turned NGTs into a tool for the sustainability of the agricultural model. With NGTs we want to add technological solutions to the farmers' toolbox against climate change, to reduce their dependence on chemical pesticides or other forms of costly dependency. These technological solution add up to nature-based ones like more rotation, more hedgerows. There is no point in opposing them. Ecology and technology can and must go hand-in-hand" Pascal Canfin Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
Throughout the extensive negotiations, Renew Europe worked to ensure that sustainability remained at the heart of the legislation. The final agreement excludes herbicide tolerant plants and plants producing known insecticidal substances from the simplified regime and introduces, as part of the overall monitoring programme, specific monitoring of sustainability impacts, including the positive, negative, economic and social impacts of traits introduced by NGTs.
" We have secured a framework that will help breeders develop crops adapted to climate change, reduce pressure on natural resources and ensure that European agriculture remains competitive in a rapidly changing world."
The agreement maintains robust safeguards for human and animal health and the environment while providing legal certainty for researchers, breeders and farmers.
By providing a clear regulatory framework for new genomic techniques, the legislation will help ensure that innovation takes place in Europe rather than elsewhere, while supporting the transition towards a more resilient, sustainable and competitive food system.”
- 2026-06-17 “Montenegro: Closer than ever to EU membership — Montenegro: Closer than ever to EU…
"Montenegro stands closer to the European Union than at any point in its history," commented the European Parliament’s standing rapporteur on Montenegro Marjan Šarec today, as the European Parliament adopted its report on Montenegro. Liberals and Democrats welcome the adoption of the report, the closure of additional negotiating chapters and recognise the sustained efforts made by Montenegrin institutions. Every step Montenegro takes towards EU membership strengthens Europe as a whole.
Progress on reforms, a firm commitment to European integration and very strong citizens’ support for EU membership- these messages marked today's vote on the Montenegro report. The Parliament’s position on the 2025 Commission report on Montenegro comes just two days after the Foreign Affairs Council confirmed that accession negotiations the provisional closure of two accession negotiations chapters. MEP Šarec commented:
“Montenegro's progress demonstrates that enlargement is a strategic investment in European security, stability and resilience - not just for the country, but for Europe as a whole. The country remains the frontrunner in the enlargement process and has achieved substantial progress over the past year, with no other country as advanced in the process. With 16 chapters closed, for Montenegro EU membership is no longer a distant aspiration, but a realistic and achievable objective.” Marjan Šarec Renew Europe MEP, Slovenia, Gibanje Svoboda
Montenegro has spent more than a decade preparing for EU membership and has opened all 33 negotiating chapters, provisionally closing 16 of them. The country has maintained a clear strategic commitment to European integration, strong public support for EU membership and alignment with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy, including restrictive measures against Russia following its aggression against Ukraine. Liberals and democrats call on state authorities and political actors to maintain momentum and continue delivering concrete results on EU-related reforms in the next stage of the accession process. EP rapporteur Šarec concluded:
“The European Union must also do its part. It must remain credible, consistent, and ready to recognise real progress when it is achieved. If Montenegro delivers, the European Union must be ready to deliver as well.””
- 2026-06-17 “No democracy without equality! — No democracy without equality!
Today, Renew Europe launched its new position paper, No Democracy Without Equality: Europe’s Response to Geopolitical Pressure and Rights Erosion.
At its core is a simple warning: attacks on women’s rights, LGBTQI+ rights and fundamental freedoms have become one of the forces reshaping democracy itself.
Developed through a cross-committee initiative involving Renew Europe Members from the Committees on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, Civil Liberties, Foreign Affairs, Human Rights and Budgets, the paper warns that anti-rights and anti-gender movements, democratic backsliding, attacks on the rule of law and geopolitical pressure increasingly reinforce one another.
The paper calls for stronger support for civil society, action against disinformation and foreign interference, greater investment in the Women, Peace and Security agenda, and renewed efforts to defend women’s rights and countering the global gender backlash, LGBTQI+ rights and fundamental freedoms both within the European Union and globally.
"Across the world, we are watching authoritarian actors challenge democratic institutions, undermine international law and fuel division within our societies. The defence of women's rights, LGBTQI+ rights and fundamental freedoms is part of Europe's response to that challenge. There is no democracy without equality, not someday, but now; not for some, but for all. Ultimately, the strength of our democracies will be measured not by what we say we stand for, but by whose rights we choose to defend when they come under pressure." Abir Al-Sahlani Renew Europe MEP, Sweden, Centerpartiet”
- 2026-06-16 “Stop the Russian drones, fix the gaps! — Stop the Russian drones, fix the…
In a resolution tabled by the Renew Europe Group and debated today, MEPs strongly condemn Russia's escalating provocations against EU and NATO Member States, including the drone strike that injured civilians in Galați, Romania, as well as repeated airspace violations over Finland and the Baltic States. Renew Europe stresses that these are not isolated incidents, but part of a deliberate Russian strategy to intimidate and destabilise Europe.
NATO agreed last week to accelerate concrete drone initiatives for frontline Member States. Allies also flagged growing threats to critical infrastructure in the Black Sea. These decisions will feed directly into the upcoming Ankara summit where drone defence will be central to the agenda.
The Alliance is moving - and the EU cannot afford to lag behind. Renew Europe insists that the EU's own flagship projects - the European Drone Defence Initiative and the Eastern Flank Watch - must now deliver with real capabilities on the ground, not just announcements.
Renew MEP Petras Austrevicius (Liberalų sąjūdis, Lithuania), EP rapporteur on this resolution stated :
“Russia continues to intensify its hybrid warfare attacks against Europe, particularly targeting countries on the EU’s Eastern Flank. It is doing so openly and is devoting enormous and ever-increasing resources to this effort. Our primary response is to rapidly strengthen our own defence capabilities, with advanced defence technology solutions being particularly essential. It is equally important to continue reducing the aggressor’s ability to continue the war against Ukraine and to carry out hybrid attacks against the EU. To achieve this, we must close the remaining loopholes in the EU sanctions mechanism and include alumina, meaning that Russian-owned factories in the EU would no longer be able to provide materials for Russian cruise and ballistic missile production.” Petras Auštrevičius Renew Europe MEP, Lithuania, Liberalų Sąjūdis
Ukraine and Moldova: partners in defence
Renew Europe calls for deep EU-Ukraine defence industrial cooperation, including through the EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance, so that Ukraine's unparalleled battlefield expertise in drone production and counter-drone systems is fully integrated into European capabilities. Also, urges the EU and Member States to establish a European Centre of Excellence for Drone Warfare, where Ukrainian instructors pass on their expertise to the EU Member States. Moldova must not be left behind: repeated violations of Moldovan airspace by Russian drones and missiles make increased support through the European Peace Facility an urgent necessity, alongside Moldova's inclusion in joint acquisitions under EDIP.
Renew MEP Dan Barna (USR, Romania) emphasised :
"Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine does not recognise borders, which is why I am issuing an imperative demand for the immediate reinforcement of the Eastern Flank and Black Sea security. We must secure increased funding in the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework for anti-drone systems to protect exposed nations, and accelerate the establishment of the Black Sea Maritime Security Centre. Europe's security is defended at its eastern borders - for the sake of all EU citizens." Dan Barna Renew Europe MEP, Romania, Uniunea Salvați România
Eastern Flank and Black Sea: a coherent, full-spectrum response
Renew Europe stresses the need for coherent strengthening of the EU and NATO's Eastern Flank along its entire length from the Arctic to the Black Sea, covering land, maritime and air dimensions. This means building detection, interception and neutralisation capabilities in frontline Member States against drones and meteorological balloons and accelerating the establishment of the Black Sea Maritime Security Hub to protect critical infrastructure.
Tougher sanctions, now
Renew Europe calls for a swift adoption of the 21st package of EU sanctions against Russia. This package must go further: targeting Russia's energy and financial sectors, and introducing an EU entry ban for former Russian combatants who fought in Ukraine.
We can't stress this enough : Russia must face the full economic and political cost of its aggression!”
- 2026-06-16 “Renew Europe welcomes Pina Picierno to the Group — Renew Europe welcomes Pina…
The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament today welcomed Italian MEP and Vice-President of the European Parliament Pina Picierno as its newest member.
A leading pro-European voice in Italy and across Europe, Pina Picierno has served as a Member of the European Parliament since 2014 and as Vice-President of the European Parliament since 2022. Throughout her political career, she has been a strong advocate for democracy, the rule of law, women's rights and unwavering support for Ukraine.
At a time when democratic values are under pressure both within and beyond Europe's borders, her decision to join Renew Europe reinforces the Group's commitment to defending liberal democracy, strengthening the rule of law and standing firmly against authoritarianism and political extremism.
Valérie Hayer, President of Renew Europe, said:
"As Vice-President of the European Parliament, Pina brings not only significant institutional experience, but also a strong political voice that has earned respect across Europe. Throughout her career, she has been a steadfast defender of democratic values, women's rights and unwavering support for Ukraine. Her commitment to the European Union has made her one of the leading figures in both Italian and European politics." Valérie Hayer Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
Pina Picierno MEP said:
"I’m very happy and honored to join Renew with the same spirit that inspired me when I began my political life: the conviction that Europe is our common destiny and that politics must have the courage to choose which side it stands on. I made that choice a long time ago: on the side of freedom, of democracy, and of a strong, federal Europe."
Welcoming the decision, Valérie Hayer added:
"Pina's decision to join our Group is a strong signal. It shows once again that our pro-European project is growing, attracting leaders who believe in an open, democratic and ambitious Europe. With Pina's arrival, Renew Europe continues to grow and strengthen its role as the political home for those determined to shape Europe's future from the centre."
Pina Picierno's arrival further strengthens Renew Europe's position as the leading pro-European force at the centre of the European Parliament, bringing together liberals, democrats, reformists and federalists committed to defending democracy, supporting Ukraine, upholding the rule of law and advancing the European project.
Renew Europe looks forward to working closely with Pina Picierno to build a stronger Europe that protects freedom, defends democratic values and responds effectively to the geopolitical challenges of our time.”
- 2026-06-15 “Historic progress for Ukraine and Moldova: Liberals and Democrats welcome the opening of the first accession negotiations cluster — Historic progress for Ukraine and…
Today’s decision of the Foreign affairs council to open the first accession negotiations cluster for Ukraine and Moldova is a historic moment. Liberals and democrats celebrate this decision and it reconfirms our position: Enlargement is a strategic necessity for Europe. Ukraine and Moldova have demonstrated their commitment to the EU through significant reform efforts, and today they finally enter the formal negotiation phase.
Liberals and democrats congratulate both countries for this milestone, which comes four years since the Council granted Ukraine and Moldova candidate status.
“The start of negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova is the right political decision, demonstrating a commitment to a united Europe. I congratulate our friends in Ukraine and Moldova and encourage them to accelerate the reform process to create a solid foundation for future membership.“ Petras Auštrevičius Renew Europe MEP, Lithuania, Liberalų Sąjūdis
, commented MEP Petras Austrevicius, Renew shadow of the EP report on Ukraine and Enlargement after the council’s communication in favour of opening the first cluster of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.
Dan Barna, Renew shadow of the EP report on Moldova added:
“Today marks the first step in the EU’s fulfilment of its promise towards Moldova. A brave country with brave people that showed us time and time again how Russia’s hybrid tactics can be successfully repelled deserves full membership and fast. While Moldova consistently ranks among the frontrunners of reforms, even frontrunners need to have their hard work recognised.” Dan Barna Renew Europe MEP, Romania, Uniunea Salvați România
Renew Europe have consistently supported Ukraine since the start of Russia’s illegal war of aggression and reaffirms solidarity with the Ukrainian people, supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders and their EU path.
Moldova's trajectory has been no less remarkable, and we have continuously commended its continued exemplary commitment to the EU accession process – this year Moldova made the greatest annual progress among candidate countries, despite significant internal and external challenges, including persistent hostile Russian interference.
Liberals and Democrats strongly support the progress made and see EU enlargement as a strategic investment in peace, security, democracy, and prosperity across the continent.”
- 2026-06-15 “Thirteen years later: More rights and better protection for air passengers — Thirteen years later: More rights…
Liberals and democrats welcome today’s final decision of the conciliation committee on the long-awaited revision of air passengers rights. The new rules strengthen air passenger rights by adding clearer timelines, new protections on the ground, and fairer pricing:
“After thirteen years, passengers finally have up to date rules for their air travel. Behind every delayed flight and every cancellation there is a real person. We fought to keep passengers rights strong and compensation fair - and while we pushed for more, this regulation delivers better Rights and clearer rules." Jan-Christoph Oetjen Renew Europe MEP, Germany, Freie Demokratische Partei
, Renew shadow rapporteur Jan- Christoph Oetjen said.
Liberals and Democrats believe that European citizens deserve fair treatment, clear rules and accessible compensation when flights are delayed, cancelled or boarding is denied. MEP Oetjen commented on what this updated regulation introduces:
“Families and people with reduced mobility will enjoy improved rights; every passenger will have more price transparency when choosing their fare, with better comparability and less hidden costs; and airlines will have to proactively inform passengers about their compensation rights and how to claim them -so in future, people should not have to go to court to claim what they're owed.”
The updated regulation introduces several key protections. Within four days of a delay or cancellation, passengers shall receive an email from the airline outlining the reason and how to claim compensation. Passengers then have nine months to file a claim, while airlines have 30 days to pay or respond. Further protections include the right to disembark after two hours on the tarmac, inclusive cabin luggage pricing, a ban on no-show fees on return flights, and strengthened rights for passengers with reduced mobility.”
- 2026-06-15 “The suspension of access to Anthropic's frontier AI models is yet another a wake-up call for Europe — The suspension of access to…
Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament strongly condemns President Trump’s decision to restrict European access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5, two leading AI models. The development comes the day before the European Parliament's debate on technological sovereignty and Europe's place in the global AI race. The debate is requested by Renew Europe.
The American move demonstrates the strategic importance of artificial intelligence and the growing geopolitical competition surrounding frontier technologies. The EU must accelerate investment in research, innovation, digital infrastructure, advanced computing capacity and the skills needed to compete in the technologies that will shape the global economy and security environment.
”These restrictions are a clear example of the current American ‘nobody but us’ mentality. While software is vulnerable worldwide, the mitigation of potential hazard is left to Americans only. It's irresponsible. With the ascent of frontier AI models, we have a huge task ahead of us to avoid a cyber bloodbath. Once again: this shows that Europe needs its own LLM’s and open weight models or face digital colonization.” Bart Groothuis Renew Europe MEP, Netherlands, Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie
“The United States is once again demonstrating what we Liberals and Democrats have warned about so many times since Trump entered into office; that the US holds a real ‘kill-switch’ over essential technologies and that they are more than willing to use it. Europe needs put on the turbo in its strive to reach digital independence. The only way to reach it is by mobilising billions of euros in our own European AI ecosystem.” Christophe Grudler Renew Europe MEP, France, Mouvement Démocrate
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly intertwined with economic competitiveness, cybersecurity and national security, Europe must act with urgency and not take access to critical technological infrastructure for granted. Strategic autonomy in the digital age will not be achieved through isolation, but through innovation, investment and the ability to remain a leading participant in global technological development.”
- 2026-06-15 “Plenary Priorities 15-18 June 2026 — Plenary Priorities 15-18 June 2026
European economic and digital independence - In the new world we face, we believe that Europe's economic and digital sovereignty must be built on competitiveness, innovation and openness. The question is not whether Europe has the resources to succeed, but whether we have the political will to use them. Europe does not lack talent, capital or industrial capacity. What we need is urgency.
Renew Europe stands ready to accelerate the reforms, investments and legislative action needed to make this Europe's independence moment.
-Affordable energy is the foundation of European independence. We must accelerate the deployment of renewables, nuclear and hydrogen, modernise our grids, strengthen interconnections and speed up permitting procedures. Reducing our dependence on imported fossil fuels is both an economic necessity and a geopolitical imperative.
-Mobilise Europe's financial strength. Every year, hundreds of billions of euros of European savings leave our continent instead of financing European innovation, industry and scale-ups. Completing the Savings and Investment Union is essential if Europeans are to finance Europe's own technological and industrial future.
-Digital sovereignty means ensuring that Europe can compete and lead in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, cloud infrastructure, quantum technologies and advanced manufacturing. It means reducing critical dependencies, strengthening resilience against economic coercion and ensuring that the technologies of tomorrow are developed in Europe, according to European values.
-Rapid implementation of the Single Market Strategy, the EU's 28th regime, the Industrial Accelerator Act and the Technological Sovereignty package. The self-inflicted fragmentation of the single market is one of the greatest obstacles to European prosperity.
Debate : Monday 15 June, 17:00, on economic independence. Tuesday 16 June, 9:00, on technological sovereignty, both initiated by Renew Europe.
Protecting EU citizen’s data from hybrid threats – the Lithuanian case - The Lithuanian data breach is a stark reminder that in today's Europe, personal data is not only a privacy issue but also a security issue. This case matters far beyond Lithuania. It raises concerns that sensitive information relating to public officials and high-risk professions could have been exposed.
What we call for:
-Public authorities and operators of critical services to apply the highest cybersecurity standards.
-Stronger European coordination, as hybrid attacks do not respect national borders.
-Europe to send a clear signal to those who seek to weaponise data against our citizens.
-The Commission to investigate the Lithuanian data breach and ensure that the personal data protection rights of all EU citizens are effectively safeguarded and implemented.
Plenary debate, upon Renew Europe’s request : Wednesday, 17 June,, 13:30.
Renew MEP : Petras Austrevicius (LIthuania)
Future of EU-China economic relations - Renew Europe supports a clear-eyed and confident approach to China. A coordinated EU common approach is a necessity to aim to re-balance trade imbalances.
-Europe must remain open to trade and dialogue, but openness cannot mean unhealthy dependence and the EU must continue to raise Chinese human rights abuses, the oppression of minorities in China and stand up for Taiwan.
-We need to de-risk critical supply chains, strengthen our technological and industrial base, defend ourselves against overcapacities, economic coercion and against illegal and unsafe products entering into the Union market especially via online marketplaces and ensure genuine reciprocity in trade.
Debate : Wednesday 17 June, 9:00
Enlargement: European Parliament votes on Montenegro - Montenegro remains the frontrunner and has achieved substantial progress over the past year, with no other country as advanced in the process. Liberals and Democrats welcome the closure of additional negotiating chapters during 2025 and early 2026 and recognise the efforts made by Montenegrin institutions. EU membership is no longer a distant aspiration, but a realistic and achievable objective and Enlargement is a strategic necessity for Europe.
Following the vote on the report by rapporteur Marjan Šarec (Renew, Slovenia) assessing Montenegro’s progress in the EU accession process, Montenegro’s Minister of European Affairs, Maida Gorčević, will join the standing rapporteur Šarec as a guest at the press conference.
When: 14.30 – 15:00, Wednesday, 17 June 2026
Where: Daphne Caruana Galizia press conference room, European Parliament, Strasbourg, and remotely
No Democracy Without Equality. Launch of Renew position paper - Renew Europe is pleased to invite you to an exclusive press breakfast marking the launch of its new position paper, No Democracy Without Equality: Europe's Response to Geopolitical Pressure and Rights Erosion .
Developed through a cross-committee initiative involving Members from FEMM, LIBE, AFET, DROI and BUDG, the paper examines the growing links between anti-rights movements, democratic backsliding, and geopolitical pressure. It outlines Renew Europe's proposals to strengthen democratic resilience, human rights and equality in Europe and beyond.
When: Wednesday, 17 June at 8:15
Venue: MEPs salon, room W5+6, WIC restaurant, European Parliament in Strasbourg

- 2026-06-10 “Renew Europe adopts Cork Declaration: a roadmap for prosperity, security and reform — Renew Europe adopts Cork…
Renew Europe today adopted its Cork Declaration at the group's study days in Ireland, setting out a political agenda for the coming weeks and months focused on cheaper energy, stronger competitiveness, better investment opportunities for Europeans, institutional reform and European security.
Meeting ahead of Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Renew Europe committed to supporting an ambitious programme that delivers tangible results for citizens, businesses and Europe's long-term strategic interests.
The declaration calls for accelerated investment in clean energy, the removal of barriers within the Single Market, the completion of the Savings and Investments Union, a modernised EU budget focused on strategic priorities, and stronger European defence capabilities in support of Ukraine and European security.
Valérie Hayer, Renew Europe President:
"We look forward to working closely with the incoming Irish Presidency to accelerate key legislation to enhancing European independence as a strategic necessity in an increasingly hostile world. The Cork Declaration charts the course for the Irish Presidency. Renew Europe will be a driving force alongside our Irish partners in delivering a bold agenda to boost Europe’s growth, security and resilience. This is about making Europe work better for Europeans with tangible benefits in their daily lives." Valérie Hayer Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
The Cork Declaration commits Renew Europe to:
• Bringing down energy costs through faster deployment of clean energy and infrastructure;
• Strengthening the Single Market and removing barriers to cross-border business;
• Completing the Savings and Investments Union to keep European capital working in Europe;
• Building a more effective and future-focused EU budget;
• Reinforcing European security, defence capabilities and support for Ukraine.
The declaration also underlines the need for Europe to remain open, competitive and outward-looking while reducing strategic dependencies and strengthening its resilience in an increasingly uncertain world.”
- 2026-06-04 “Renew Europe urges EU to tighten Schengen visa rules for Russians ahead of summer holidays — Renew Europe urges EU to tighten…
The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament today backed a push by EU member states to restrict Schengen visa access for Russian travellers before the summer holidays, as justice and home affairs ministers meet to discuss the proposal.
The initiative follows repeated calls by the European Parliament for stricter controls on Russian and Belarusian citizens entering the European Union, including enhanced security screenings during the Schengen visa application process. Parliament has also called for applicants to provide military service records, while maintaining humanitarian exemptions for dissidents, human rights defenders and those fleeing persecution.
Malik Azmani MEP, member if the Civil Liberties Committee, said:
"At a time when Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine and intensifies hybrid threats against Europe by destabilizing our democracies, we cannot afford a fragmented approach to Schengen visas. A common European framework is needed to strengthen our security, close existing loopholes, and ensure that Russians cannot exploit our openness while Europe stands united in defence of its values and security. European security and safety must come first." Malik Azmani Renew Europe MEP, Netherlands, Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie
Petras Auštrevičius MEP, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Renew Europe’s standing rapporteur on Russia and Belarus, said:
"In light of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, it would be both politically and humanitarily unjustifiable to continue with business-as-usual tourism. We must send a strong message to the Russian people, urging them to take action to prevent their government from killing innocent people in Ukraine. Those responsible for the aggression and crimes must know that we are aware of their actions, that they are not welcome in the EU, and that justice will be served." Petras Auštrevičius Renew Europe MEP, Lithuania, Liberalų Sąjūdis
According to the 2026 Schengen Barometer, Russian visa applications increased by 8 per cent in 2025, with 623,451 visas issued across the Schengen area.
Renew Europe warned that current visa practices remain too fragmented and create potential security risks at a time when Russia continues its war of aggression against Ukraine and intensifies hybrid attacks against European democracies.
The group called on the European Commission to strengthen the implementation of existing visa rules, harmonise practices across Schengen states, and introduce targeted restrictions on individuals linked to the Russian regime, military structures, intelligence services or state-sponsored propaganda activities.
Renew Europe also urged the Justice and Home Affairs Council to move swiftly towards a common European approach and ensure that any new measures are in place before the peak summer travel season.”
- 2026-06-04 “Filmed by Meta’s glasses without their knowledge — Filmed by Meta’s glasses without…
Recent media coverage reports on women being unknowingly filmed in the street via AI-enabled smart glasses and wearable recording devices. The footage is allegedly intended to promote seduction coaching businesses.
Beyond that specific issue, the boom of wearable devices combining cameras and microphones raises important questions regarding privacy and data protection. Last year, 7 million pairs of Meta smart glasses were sold.
Today, Renew MEPs wrote to the Commission to ask what could be done at European level. Read the parliamentary question here .
“AI-enabled smart glasses are evolving rapidly, but many people remain unclear about what the legal boundaries are. I believe the European Commission and the European Data Protection Board should provide guidance on how existing EU rules, especially the GDPR, apply to these devices. At the same time, it is unacceptable for any woman to worry about being secretly filmed in public and having those images shared online. Where privacy rights are breached or civil and criminal laws are broken, authorities must be able to act swiftly and effectively." Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová Renew Europe MEP, Slovakia, Progresívne Slovensko
“As usual, women fall victim first, but this is not just a women issue, it is a general privacy concern. In March this year, the Swedish privacy watchdog issued guidance. In May the French one issued an action plan and started sharing best practices. A coordinated approach is needed”. Abir Al-Sahlani Renew Europe MEP, Sweden, Centerpartiet”
- 2026-06-03 “Tech Sovereignty Package: a step when we needed a leap — Tech Sovereignty Package: a step…
The long-awaited Tech Sovereignty package presented today by the Commission is a good start, but the required European response to increase Europe’s independence from non-EU providers when it comes to critical digital infrastructure must be stronger, warn Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament. Europe needs to urgently step up the development and increase demand of European alternatives, including regaining leadership in semiconductor production and resilience in the broader electronics manufacturing ecosystem, while also ensuring a strong and secured EU cloud and digital public infrastructure.
We also regret that the Commission does not clearly define the meaning of a sovereign cloud.
Strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy and finding the right balance between openness and autonomy in this area will allow citizens, businesses, and industries to fully benefit from the AI revolution while reducing reliance on non-EU providers. At the same time, it will ensure that vital sectors, such as telecom, energy, and public administration, remain under exclusive European jurisdiction, shielded from foreign interference.
Valérie Hayer, President of Renew Europe Group, says:
“Today, every industrial policy is also a sovereignty policy. Europe is not only investing in semiconductors, it is investing in its independence and market power. This an important first step to give greater weight to strategic security criteria, including the development and control of critical software, hardware and cloud infrastructures within Europe as a new cornerstone of a European technology strategy that strengthens resilience, safeguards sovereignty and fosters our competitiveness." Valérie Hayer Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
Bart Groothuis, Member in the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, and who negotiated the current Chips Act, says:
"This isn't routine legislation. It's a fundamental choice about Europe's future. The Chips Act means nothing without the Cloud and AI Development Act. They jointly determine the demand creation for European advanced AI, cloud and semiconductor technologies. The real question is: will this contribute to building our own large language model? Right now, you cannot train an LLM in the EU that complies with all existing rules. We need to fix that – or face technological colonisation." Bart Groothuis Renew Europe MEP, Netherlands, Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie
Christophe Grudler, coordinator of the committee on Industry, Research and Energy, says:
“While I welcome today’s announcements, we must raise our ambitions significantly: Europe must be able to operate and maintain our critical digital infrastructure independently from third countries, particularly for the public sector. I also regret the lack of ambitious Open Source proposals. Let us remember that Linux powers our data centers. But relying on Open Source technologies whose governance and contributions are dominated by American or Chinese entities is not sovereignty. I call on the Commission to propose additional measures to support European contributions to Open Source technologies." Christophe Grudler Renew Europe MEP, France, Mouvement Démocrate”
- 2026-05-21 “Welcoming persecutors : the Commission's Afghan mistake — Welcoming persecutors : the…
Renew Europe strongly condemns the European Commission's decision to invite Taliban representatives to Brussels and calls on the Commission to immediately reverse this decision.
The Taliban have systematically dismantled every right of Afghan women and girls. Over 150 edicts have banned girls from school beyond sixth grade, stripped women of employment, freedom of movement and access to justice. In 2025 alone, at least 170 women were publicly flogged.
Recently, the Taliban's adopted a new Criminal Procedure Code for Courts, strongly condemned by the EP resolution voted today, that legalises domestic violence, criminalises women who seek protection from abuse, and imposes corporal punishment amounting to torture.
These are not abstract policies. They are deliberate tools of dehumanisation. The ICC has issued arrest warrants against senior Taliban leaders for crimes against humanity on grounds of gender persecution. These are not interlocutors - they are persecutors.
Against this backdrop, inviting a Taliban delegation to Brussels - whatever the stated purpose - amounts to granting official status to criminals. The Commission may frame this as pragmatic engagement on migration issues. But Realpolitik has its limits. You cannot negotiate with persecutors without legitimising them.
Renew MEP Raquel García Hermida-van der Walle (D66, Netherlands), Chair of the Delegation for the relations with Afghanistan, stated :
"Inviting a Taliban delegation to Brussels to discuss migration is a betrayal of our values. The Taliban receive the privilege of dealmaking with the entire European Union and some seem fine with it. Yes, getting migration under control is important, but so is maintaining a minimum of decency and standards. Europeans died to give women and girls their rights. So no, don't legitimize the Taliban - ever. Those who carry out crimes against humanity should never set foot on European soil without passing through the International Criminal Court in The Hague first." Raquel García Hermida-Van Der Walle Renew Europe MEP, Netherlands, Democraten 66
The European Union is founded on the indivisibility of human rights. A "pragmatic approach" that tramples on those values is not pragmatism - it is a political and moral failure.
Renew Europe urges the Commission to cancel this meeting, uphold the EU's non-recognition policy towards the Taliban, and place respect for women's rights at the centre of any engagement with Afghanistan.”
- 2026-05-20 “Twelve years on: First ever assessment of EU maritime planning’s impact on fisheries — Twelve years on: First ever…
We are now counting 12 years since the EU spatial planning rules have been adopted. Today, however, the uses of the sea and maritime activities are constantly expanding, giving rise to conflicts of use that affect fisheries and aquaculture, which are losing ground and have no guaranteed place in maritime spatial planning. Today Liberals and Democrats called for a fundamental shift and the European Parliament adopted it’s first assessment of the implementation of the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive from a fisheries and aquaculture perspective.
Renew MEP Stéphanie Yon-Courtin, Rapporteur on the implementation report and Vice-chair of the Committee on Fisheries said: “Fisheries and aquaculture must be formally recognised in EU law as strategic sectors essential to food sovereignty and the development of coastal regions - with guaranteed space in maritime spatial plans, priority zones for fisheries and aquaculture, and mandatory involvement of professionals in the management of maritime space.” Stéphanie Yon-Courtin Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
Ahead of the upcoming EU Ocean Act, we are calling for a revision of the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive. The revision must ensure that maritime space planning is more coordinated and balanced, that fishing professionals and stakeholders are fully involved in planning decisions, that cross-border and macro-regional planning strategies are strengthened, and that fisheries and aquaculture have a guaranteed place in maritime space.
“‘Fishers and aquaculture producers must not be sacrificed in maritime spatial planning. The fair coexistence of activities is essential for the future of our maritime sectors, the respect for those working at sea, and the health of our marine ecosystems“, Stéphanie Yon-Courtin added.
This implementation report assesses the implementation of the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive since 2014 from a fisheries and aquaculture perspective and identifies three core problems: implementation is fragmented across member states; fisheries have no designated space and are squeezed out by offshore energy, shipping, marine protected areas and defence operations; and planning decisions lack the harmonised data needed to protect fishing communities. Without better planning, EU food sovereignty and the viability of coastal communities are at risk. The report also flags coastal erosion and climate change as growing threats to marine resources that maritime planning must urgently address.
The adoption of the report already sends a strong signal and shapes the next discussion before the Ocean Act: plan with fisheries and aquaculture in mind and secure Europe's fishing communities and food sovereignty for generations to come.”

When political decisions put citizens' freedoms, fundamental rights and fair access to European funds at risk - it is not only a national concern, it requires European response. Today the European Parliament adopted a resolution that sends a clear message in response: EU money and EU values are inseparable and restoration of rule of law safeguards in Slovakia is urgent. Liberals and democrats pushed for this vote and we are now calling for: restoration of rule of law, full investigations into alleged misuse of EU funds and protection of postal voting rights for Slovaks abroad.
“European funds must serve the public interest, and therefore the interests of citizens. But when the rule of law, an independent judiciary, or the media are weakened, we cannot remain bystanders.”, MEP Wilmes commented after the vote. Sophie Wilmès Renew Europe MEP, Belgium, Mouvement Réformateur
This resolution puts a strong and deliberate focus on corruption and the misuse of EU funds. The dismantling of anti-corruption institutions and the alleged misuse of European money were the central findings of last year's fact-finding missions to Bratislava, one of which was led by Renew Europe MEP Sophie Wilmès (Mouvement Réformateur, Belgium).
“The findings are clear after the two missions of Parliament to Slovakia. With today’s vote, Parliament is taking responsibility and sending a clear signal: the Commission and the Slovak authorities must now take concrete action to ensure respect for European values and obligations.”, MEP Wilmes added.
Up to 80% of public investment in Slovakia involves European funding. Now, the European Commission must trigger the rule-of-law conditionality mechanism and launch a full investigation into the alleged misuse of EU funds, in particular through the Agricultural Paying Agency and the so-called guesthouse projects, where European funds appear to have financed luxury private estates with little or no public benefit.
More broadly, serious concerns persist regarding the state of the rule of law in Slovakia, including respect for judicial independence, the primacy of EU law, minority rights, and the increasing use of accelerated legislative procedures that undermine democratic scrutiny and legal certainty.
Since the EU Parliament discussed Slovakia earlier this year, more concerning facts were made public - including Fico’s government efforts to challenge EU law and electoral laws. Our call to Slovak authorities is to strengthen electoral laws and to guarantee equal voting rights, including postal voting, for all Slovak citizens, wherever they live.
The new parliament position is an important step towards Slovakia's obligation as an EU Member State and was supported by four other political groups. It is the result of Liberals and Democrats’ continuous engagement to promote transparency and constant efforts to apply the tools needed for accountable management of Union funds that serve citizens.”

European Liberals and Democrats are pleased that many of our key demands to "Trump proof" the Turnberry deal are reflected in the final agreement reached overnight, to ensure that if the US reneges on the agreement, Europe can hit back.
The agreement introduces a safeguard clause, a steel clause, a sunset clause expiring in December 2029, and strengthened suspension provisions - alongside clear reporting and evaluation mechanisms.
The suspension mechanism agreed by negotiators empowers the European Commission to reimpose tariffs if Washington wouldn’t comply with the agreement, particularly regarding steel and aluminium derivatives.
MEP Karin Karlsbro (Liberalerna, Sweden), Renew shadow rapporteur on this file stated :
"Reaching this agreement was necessary, to Trump-proof trade with the United States and to avoid a pointless trade war. Trade relations must be built on mutual respect and Europe has now set conditions for the transatlantic relations. By finalising this agreement we are doing what we can to provide ourselves and European businesses with as much stability as possible under current circumstances." Karin Karlsbro Renew Europe MEP, Sweden, Liberalerna
Renew Europe will continue to hold the Commission accountable for the implementation of this agreement and to ensure that European interests remain fully protected throughout the lifetime of the deal.”

Last night, MEPs and representatives of the member states, have reached a deal on the “AI Omnibus”, amending EU rules on Artificial Intelligence.
This omnibus does not lower the bar for user protection standards. In fact, it raises it. A ban on “nudifiers” - systems that use AI to create sexually explicit images of identifiable person without their consent - is enshrined into law.
Michael McNamara (Ireland), who negotiated the package as rapporteur in the civil liberties committee, says : “I am relieved that we reached an agreement early this morning that simplifies some key aspects of AI regulation in Europe while maintaining protections. We also reached agreement that AI that generates non-consensual sexual imagery or child sex abuse material would be banned.” Michael Mcnamara Renew Europe MEP, Ireland
This ban was not in the original Commission proposal and was an amendment tabled by Renew, which made into the final version of the law.
On the simplification side, this omnibus delays by 3 to 4 months provisions of the IA Act (like the obligation to label AI generated content) so businesses have more time to adapt.
The omnibus also removes some overlaps. The machinery sector, for instance, has specific AI rules enshrined in EU laws so it will be excluded from the scope of the AI act altogether.
Svenja Hahn (Germany), who negotiated the file for Renew Europe in the internal market committee, says: “ The AI Omnibus deal is a step into the right direction for European businesses. By limiting unnecessary double regulation of industrial AI and taking Machinery products out of the AI Act, we are cutting red tape, strengthening legal certainty, and giving many companies the freedom to innovate and stay competitive. We wanted this solution for more sectors to boost AI made in Europe even more, but that was unfortunately not possible with the member states .” Svenja Hahn Renew Europe MEP, Germany, Freie Demokratische Partei”

Liberals and Democrats welcome the European Commission’s social package, presented today, as a crucial step in modernising Europe’s social contract and ensuring that no one is left behind. Encompassing the first ever EU anti-poverty strategy, a strengthened Child Guarantee, measures against housing exclusion, and the long-awaited and much needed enhanced EU strategy for the rights for persons with disabilities, aligns with our long-standing commitment to fostering a more inclusive and cohesive European Union.
Breaking the cycle of poverty, securing basic living conditions, and dismantling systemic barriers for vulnerable groups are not only moral imperatives for us but also the foundation of individual empowerment and equal opportunities. By addressing these challenges, the Commission’s package paves the way for a society we strive for, where everyone can thrive, contribute, and benefit from the EU’s shared prosperity.
Jana Toom, Renew Europe’s Coordinator in the Committee on Employment and Social affairs, says:
“In these uncertain times, the cost of living is top of mind for most Europeans. With 1 and 5 Europeans at risk of poverty or social exclusion, it is high time that the EU is taking a major step with the Anti-poverty strategy. We must put this into practice with adequate allocations in the next EU budget and through the upcoming Quality Jobs Act.”
Hristo Petrov, Chair of the Working Group on the European Child Guarantee and Member of the Committee on Employment and Social affairs, says:
“The EU Anti-Poverty Strategy marks a positive step forward for Europe’s most vulnerable. The life-cycle approach is notably welcomed, as it is during childhood that the foundations are laid. The Strategy sets out the right course of action based on access to quality jobs, increased support from social services for families and the fight against discrimination. We can't expect to eradicate poverty using old tools. We must adopt a targeted approach for children in need, young people, and Roma communities, backed by budgetary resources at European level. Strengthening the Child Guarantee will be crucial in this context to ensure integrated access not only to essential services but also to social, sporting and cultural experiences, for the well-being of children and to prevent the next generation from falling into poverty.””

Today marks a long-awaited and much needed leap forward for freedom of movement of workers and a well-functioning single market, as the Committee on Employment and Social affairs (EMPL) endorses the trilogue agreement which significantly strengthens and improves cross-border coordination of social security systems.
In practice this means that workers, businesses, and national administrations soon will benefit from clear, modern, efficient and simpler EU rules to protect a person’s social rights, including sickness, parental, retirement and unemployment benefits, when moving within the EU, EEA and Switzerland. Moreover, the agreement introduces robust new safeguards to detect and combat fraud.
In particular, the new rules tackle letterbox companies, improve protection of workers working outside their Member State, extend the length of export of unemployment benefit across borders, institute new rules making the Member State of employment responsible for supporting cross-border workers who lose their jobs and modernise provisions on long-term care and family benefits.
While Renew Europe regrets that an agreement on this has been in deadlock nearly a decade, we are proud to have been a proactive player in ensuring that an interinstitutional agreement has finally been reached.
Jana Toom, represented Renew Europe in the negotiations:
"The millions of Europeans who work abroad are not only vital contributors to their host economies but also the living engine of European integration. The new rules we finally have agreed on makes the experience for mobile workers and the countries involved simpler and fairer while it reinforces our Single Market.” Jana Toom Renew Europe MEP, Estonia”
- 2026-04-30 “Unlocking rural growth: European Parliament backs stronger support for women entrepreneurs — Unlocking rural growth: European…
The European Parliament today adopted a report calling for stronger EU action to support women entrepreneurs in rural, island and outermost regions, from access to finance and digital skills to healthcare and gender mainstreaming across the EU budget.
Women in rural areas are central to Europe’s local economies, food security and social cohesion, yet they remain largely invisible in official statistics, underrepresented in Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) payments, and locked out of decision-making structures. The gender employment gap in rural areas stands at 13%, and women entrepreneurs receive just 1–2% of venture capital, despite delivering higher returns than their male counterpart.
“Women in rural areas are one of Europe’s most overlooked economic forces. Closing this gap could add up to €3.15 trillion to EU GDP by 2050. With this report, we are setting out concrete solutions to make that happen: better access to finance, stronger integration into EU funding, and a digital agenda that finally includes rural women.” Valérie Devaux Renew Europe MEP, France, Union des Démocrates et Indépendants
The report calls for a stronger focus on gender equality in EU funding programmes, including the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) and Horizon Europe. It also calls for a dedicated Female Founders Fund and a rural-tailored EU Investment Savings Account to help address the persistent finance gap faced by women-led rural businesses.
On digital and STEM inclusion, the report highlights that there are nearly four times as many men as women in information and communication technology occupations across the EU. It calls for gender equality objectives to be embedded in the Digital Education Action Plan and in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence and data science.
“If we want women in rural, island and remote areas to fully participate in the economy, we cannot ignore access to healthcare, including sexual and reproductive health and rights. Too many women still face barriers in accessing these services, which directly affects their ability to work, start businesses and build financial independence. This report recognises that link and brings it into the EU policy framework. Securing this recognition was an important priority for Renew Europe in the negotiations." With Armenia's parliamentary elections set for 7 June 2026, the European Parliament today adopted a resolution initiated by the Renew Europe Group, calling for urgent action to protect the integrity of the vote.
Armenia is the only democracy in its region. On 26 March 2025, its parliament adopted legislation formally expressing the country's aspiration to join the European Union. That choice carries a price: Russia is already working to undermine it. Disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, illicit political financing and the mobilisation of oligarchic networks are being deployed to destabilise Armenia's democratic process - mirroring tactics used in recent elections in Moldova and Georgia.
The interference goes to the highest level: on 1 April 2026, Vladimir Putin personally pressed Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to allow detained Russian-Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan to stand in the June elections. Vote-buying attempts have been documented, and Russia is applying direct economic pressure on Armenia to influence the outcome of the vote. Renew Europe condemns these actions in the strongest terms. Armenia's sovereignty is non-negotiable.
"Armenian democracy is a miracle in a region where Armenia stands as an exception. Faced with all those seeking to pressure Armenian voters, the country is looking to the European Union to help it hold free and fair elections. Let us not let it down," Nathalie Loiseau Renew Europe MEP, France, Horizons
said Nathalie Loiseau (Horizons, France), Renew shadow rapporteur for this resolution and Chair of the EUDS Committee.
The resolution calls for a robust international observation mission, enhanced cybersecurity for electoral infrastructure, full transparency of campaign financing, and strong safeguards against vote-buying and foreign-funded coercion. It also welcomes the establishment on 21 April 2026 of the EU Partnership Mission in Armenia (EUPM Armenia), which - following the model deployed in Moldova - will provide direct support to Armenian institutions in countering hybrid threats, disinformation and illicit financial flows ahead of the vote.
The upcoming European Political Community Summit on 4 May and the first-ever EU-Armenia Summit on 5 May in Yerevan must be more than symbolic. They are a historic opportunity to send an unambiguous signal of European solidarity and to politically anchor Armenia within Europe through concrete deliverables on connectivity, security and democratic resilience.”

Today, the European Commission preliminarily found Instagram and Facebook in breach of the Digital Services Act (DSA) for failing to identify, assess and mitigate the risks of minors under 13 years old accessing their services.
Sandro Gozi (Mouvement Démocrate /France), who sits in the Parliament’s working group supervising the Digital Services Act, says: “Enough is enough. Meta disregarded readily available scientific evidence showing that younger children are particularly vulnerable to the harms of platforms like Instagram and Facebook. This isn't negligence—it's a business model. The DSA gives Europe the tools to act. We have to use them.” Sandro Gozi Renew Europe MEP, France, Mouvement Démocrate
Stéphanie Yon-Courtin (Renaissance/France), who negotiated a report on the protection of minors online for Renew, says: “This decision ends the era of platform impunity in Europe. But calling out Meta’s breach of the Digital Services Act is not enough. A violation must trigger immediate consequences: action, sanctions and temporary suspension until full compliance. Protecting minors online is not optional. It is non-negotiable.” Stéphanie Yon-Courtin Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová (Progresívne Slovensko/Slovakia), who sits in the public health committee, says: “We keep hearing excuses from online platforms about why protecting children online is supposedly too difficult. Yet, in this case, they even ignore their own terms and conditions! Children under 13 years old should not be on social media. Just like they are not allowed to smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol. I urge the Commission to swiftly conclude the investigation and to come up with an EU harmonised approach to age limit for online platforms. This is a public health crisis that we are talking about.” Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová Renew Europe MEP, Slovakia, Progresívne Slovensko”
- 2026-04-29 “Lebanon is bleeding. Europe must respond. — Lebanon is bleeding. Europe must…
Renew Europe reaffirms its full solidarity with the Lebanese people. We fully endorse the position of the President of Lebanon who has set out a clear framework for negotiations: “No compromise, no concession, and no acceptance of what does not serve Lebanese sovereignty.” While the full disarmament of Hezbollah is a legitimate objective, it must not come at the cost of Lebanon’s sovereignty or be used as leverage against its people.
Lebanon is caught in a conflict it did not choose, squeezed between Israeli military operations that struck Beirut’s neighbourhoods, razed entire villages and now occupy a substantial portion of its territory, and Hezbollah’s which has acted for decades as Iran’s proxy. The human cost is devastating: over 1.2 million people displaced, more than 2,000 killed and 7,000 injured, massive destruction, and an enormous reconstruction bill for a country already on its knees. This humanitarian crisis demands an urgent European response.
Renew Europe strongly condemns Israel’s ongoing violations of the ceasefire. Lebanese civilian casualties from Israeli airstrikes are being reported every single day. Israel’s legitimate security concerns cannot justify destruction of this scale. That ceasefire was imposed by the United States, and Washington must now remind its ally of its obligations.
As Christophe Grudler (Modem, France), Renew Europe’s shadow rapporteur on Lebanon, put it:
“Lebanon is one of the few democracies in the Middle East. Our role is to help it develop, and in particular to help it disarm Iran-funded militias. Our role is not to watch the country disappear under Israeli bombs.” Christophe Grudler Renew Europe MEP, France, Mouvement Démocrate
The group also expresses its gravest concern over the killing of a Lebanese journalist in an Israeli airstrike. According to Reporters Without Borders, evidence strongly suggests a deliberate targeting. This is an intolerable attack on press freedom and must be firmly condemned.
Barry Andrews (Fianna Fáil, Ireland), chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Development, was unequivocal:
“Even during this so-called ceasefire, the number of journalists and media workers being killed is shocking. As chair of the Development Committee, which oversees EU humanitarian aid efforts, I will keep what is happening in Lebanon on the agenda. When I was in Beirut last month, I saw the suffering of civilians first hand. Hezbollah must stop the rockets, but the EU must also act by putting sanctions on Israel back on the table. Empty political statements against war crimes are of no use.” Barry Andrews Renew Europe MEP, Ireland, Fianna Fáil Party
Renew Europe urges the EU to actively support efforts toward a durable political solution - one that is inclusive and regionally owned. The fragile ceasefire must deliver real outcomes: Israeli withdrawal and internationally supervised disarmament of Hezbollah. Lebanon is not a peripheral crisis. It is a test of Europe’s ability to act in its own neighbourhood.”
- 2026-04-29 “Renew Europe push for accountability as Ukraine civilian casualties reach record highs — Renew Europe push for…
The European Parliament debated a resolution calling for accountability for Russia's systematic attacks against Ukrainian civilians, with a vote scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday.
According to the UN, 2025 was the deadliest year for Ukrainian civilians since Russia launched its full-scale invasion - and 2026 looks set to be worse still, with first-quarter casualties running 20% higher than the same period last year.
The resolution, initiated and led by Renew Europe, strongly reaffirms its condemnation of Russia's war of aggression and demands an immediate, unconditional ceasefire, full military withdrawal, end to deportations, and release of all detained civilians. Russia also continues to hold children, thousands of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians in inhumane conditions.
Renew Europe MEP Petras Auštrevičius (Liberalų sąjūdis, Lithuania), lead rapporteur for the European Parliament, stated:
“Each day of Russia's four-year war of aggression against Ukraine is a reminder of the tens of thousands of lives lost and the massive destruction of civilian and critical infrastructure that makes life almost unbearable. Today the European Parliament gave its consent for the EU to join the convention establishing an International Claims Commission for Ukraine, which will enable Ukrainian people to seek for financial compensation for losses caused by Russia. Russian immobilised assets should be used as a source for such compensation. However, when we say that Russia must pay, we are referring to those responsible for starting and enabling the war of aggression. These individuals must be brought before the Special Tribunal. To achieve this, all EU Member States must join the ongoing efforts to establish the Special Tribunal, and the EU must play an active role in garnering broad international support. This is the least we can do to honour the memory of the victims and fallen Ukrainian defenders. “ Petras Auštrevičius Renew Europe MEP, Lithuania, Liberalų Sąjūdis
The resolution translates these concerns into concrete demands across the following key areas:
Accountability & justice - We urge continuous support for all efforts to document, investigate and prosecute Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine, including full support for the International Criminal Court's ongoing investigation into war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed in Ukraine.
Sanctions - We call for strict maintenance and expansion of EU sanctions against Russia and insist that no sanctions should be lifted before a peace agreement is sustainably implemented.
Financial & military support - We urge massively increased military support, particularly in air defence and deep strike capabilities.
Reconstruction - We reaffirm the EU's commitment to Ukraine's reconstruction, stressing the strategic role of the Ukraine Facility in supporting recovery and EU membership prospects.
Finally, we insist that accountability must extend to Russia's highest political, military and judicial leadership.”

Today, the Commission issued “Better Regulation” guidelines to rethink the way new EU rules will be made.
Dainius Žalimas (Laisvės partija/Lithuania), who drafted a report on the monitoring of the application of EU law, says: “Thinking about how to make better new rules is all well and good, but the Commission should start by making sure existing and mutually agreed rules are applied correctly across the EU. Our single market suffers from lack of enforcement.” Dainius Žalimas Renew Europe MEP, Lithuania, Laisvés Partija
The report from Dainius Žalimas , debated today and voted tomorrow found that:
- The Commission has become reluctant to initiate infringement proceedings before the European Court of Justice, even in cases involving clear and persistent breaches of EU law;
- The initiation of infringement procedures remains selective and are not systematically followed by enforcement action
- The criteria used by the Commission to prioritise certain enforcement actions over others are not made clear or transparent.
- Even failure to implement ECJ rulings are not being followed through via penalty payments.
Dainius Žalimas concludes: “Better regulation is good. But effective regulation is even better.” Dainius Žalimas Renew Europe MEP, Lithuania, Laisvés Partija”
- 2026-04-28 “Consent, not resistance: European Parliament backs consent-based definition of rape — Consent, not resistance: European…
The European Parliament has today adopted a landmark report calling on the European Commission to bring forward dedicated legislation establishing an EU-wide consent-based definition of rape. The vote marks a decisive step forward, following the setback in 2024 when a consent-based definition was dropped from the EU's broader directive on violence against women after several Member States argued the EU lacked the legal competence to legislate on rape.
For the first time at EU level, it recognises the “freeze response”, an involuntary reaction to fear that can lead to temporary paralysis, alongside the “fawn response”, a survival strategy where victims appease their attacker to avoid escalation, establishing that neither constitutes consent. It also makes clear that consent can be withdrawn at any moment during a sexual act. The report calls for 24-hour crisis centres across the EU, accessible without a formal report, and for extended statutes of limitations for rape offences, recognising that trauma often delays reporting.
Renew Europe strongly welcomes the inclusion of a definition of rape culture as a structural problem rather than individual misconduct, and mandatory training for law enforcement, prosecutors and judges.
"The strength of any legal framework lies in its consistent application. In the area of sexual violence, that consistency has too often been lacking, with the burden in practice falling on victims rather than on establishing whether consent was freely given. This has to stop. It is time to strengthen the protection of victims and survivors and change how sexual offenses are viewed across the entire Union. Today’s vote marks an extremely important step forward. This is about ensuring that the law protects victims effectively and delivers justice in practice. Sex without consent is rape." Anna-Maja Henriksson Renew Europe MEP, Finland, Svenska folkpartiet
"Today, the European Parliament named what courts have refused to see for decades. Most rapes are committed by someone the victim knows, at home, without physical violence, and most victims are paralysed by fear rather than fight back. For years the law has been built around the wrong picture of rape entirely. This report also names rape culture for what it is, not a collection of bad individuals but a system of attitudes and norms that normalises sexual violence and protects perpetrators. Changing the law is how you start dismantling that system, and this vote is the first step." Abir Al-Sahlani Renew Europe MEP, Sweden, Centerpartiet”

Earlier this month, the European Parliament budgetary committee adopted its position on the EU long-term budget with significant Renew Europe victories . That position was reconfirmed today.
Parliament also adopted its budgetary guidelines for 2027. Liberals and democrats in the European Parliament stand united in delivering a budget for 2027 that empowers our citizens, safeguards our values and secures our shared future. Since the budgetary margins are not as big as we would wish for the last year of the current multiannual financial framework (MFF), we are working even harder to ensure that every euro of EU taxpayer’s money is allocated where it is most needed and that the budget is kept responsive and flexible, always with the interest of European citizens, businesses and industry first.
Lucia Yar (Progresívne Slovensko/Slovakia) , Renew Europe’s coordinator on budgetary affairs, says: “It is no coincidence that we are adopting the Budgetary Guidelines for 2027 on the very same day as the interim report on the Multiannual Financial Framework. The priorities we are setting for the next annual budget mirror the direction we want to take for the next seven years from 2028 onwards. In a rapidly changing geopolitical environment, Europe must stand firmly by its citizens and regions, strengthen its defence capabilities, and remain globally competitive. Our budgetary choices must reflect these ambitions clearly and consistently.” Lucia Yar Renew Europe MEP, Slovakia, Progresívne Slovensko
Fabienne Keller (Renaissance/France) , Renew Europe’s negotiator on the MFF, says : "We will be turning a page with this 2027 EU budget. This last 'tranche' of the previous MFF shows the changes we need to make for the future. The next MFF must be more flexible and more ambitious. Times demand it. This 2027 EU budget will also be – we hope – the last we’ll have which is financed overwhelmingly by Member states direct contributions. The next long-term budget must rely on more EU-wide stream of revenue. This will be one of Renew’s red line for the MFF negotiation to come.” Fabienne Keller Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
Earlier this spring the Commission clarified that EU funds can be used to support access to abortion through the European social fund plus (ESF+). We are proud to have been the frontrunners in ensuring that this new, long-awaited, possibility created through the citizen’s initiative "My voice, my choice", immediately comes to use by successfully securing that the Guidelines include firm and clear encouragement to Member States of using available resources to fight gender-based violence and to support sexual and reproductive health and related services.
Lucia Yar adds: “We welcome that the ‘My Voice, My Choice’ initiative is now echoed in the Budgetary Guidelines. It sends a clear signal that even in a world where we see increasing attempts to roll back the rights of women and minorities, the European Parliament is choosing to move in the opposite direction, and to walk the talk. We cannot praise civic mobilisation only when it is politically convenient and in front of cameras. But we must back it up with concrete and predictable financial support. Today, the Parliament reaffirmed that EU funds, under the ESF+ programme, can support Member States willing to ensure access to abortion care for those who cannot obtain it in their home country.” Lucia Yar Renew Europe MEP, Slovakia, Progresívne Slovensko
By prioritizing health, security, and technological advancement while upholding budgetary discipline and sound financial management and strengthening measures to fight corruption, we can build a Europe that is not only competitive but also resilient in today’s turbulent geopolitical context.”
- 2026-04-28 “Tail-wagging: first EU law on cats and dogs becomes reality — Tail-wagging: first EU law on cats…
With today’s vote in parliament, the first EU law to protect cats and dogs became a reality. Renew Europe Group welcomes this new law which will ensure cats and dogs are bred, kept and placed on the EU market in a controlled way, avoiding abuses, painful practices and risks for their health. The new measures will allow traceability and set minimum welfare standards for breeders, sellers, shelters, and foster homes.
“No more abuses and illegal trade with our beloved companions this vote stops the commercial practices that used to put pets at risk of cruelty. It is a final step of a long awaited regulation which protects our most vulnerable furry friends and their owners. It is a sign of humanity.”
, Renew shadow rapporteur Michal Wiezik said.
With more transparency in the process, the new solutions include: 100% traceability thanks to identification and registration for all cats and dogs, a simplified system of registration to detect more effectively illegal movements of pets from third countries into the Union, and better care for the animals through informed adoption, support for shelters and training of caretakers in professional establishments, which are key features of this regulation that Renew fought for. MEP Wiezik explains what the new measures mean:
“In addition to clearer welfare safeguards, citizens will be able to verify the breeder at sale and they will get clear information on their pet’s origin and health. Not only are we now finally able to prevent illegal breeding and fraudulent trading, but the life will also be easier for all animal lovers – with an ID and registration for all cats and dogs, with easier travel or return of lost pets, with more care, integrity and responsibility and a clear reminder that an animal is not a toy.” Michal Wiezik Renew Europe MEP, Slovakia, Progresívne Slovensko
Until now there was no law, no common framework and as a result individual actions of Member States had limited effect, dogs and cats were traded freely in the EU and illegal trade from third countries was facilitated. Over 60% of pet sales now occur online, often through unreliable sources, the new regulation will better protect buyers by ensuring they can choose their cats and dogs from suppliers that uphold proper health and welfare standards. It gives a clear framework for professional operators who have invested and will continue investing in facilities and care practices that meet the needs of animals. It also allows for gradual adaptation to the new regime. Thanks to the digitalisation of records, professionals who comply with established standards will no longer face unfair competition from illegal, fraudulent, and unsafe activities that endanger animal welfare. We welcome the European Commission’s commitment to work over the next two years towards the full digitalisation of the existing Pet Passport - a measure advocated by Renew Europe to simplify procedures for law abiding pet owners and operators, while reducing the time and complexity of border controls and making it easier to identify unlawful movements.”

Renew Europe welcomes the adoption of a revised, faster and more flexible, European Globalisation Fund (EGF) for displaced workers, adopted in plenary on Tuesday.
In times where expected job cuts and large-scale restructuring are exceeding job creation, particularly in sectors such as retail, manufacturing and energy intense industries, it is vital to turn the tide and ensure that the EGF is fit to respond to the challenges workers face today.
We are therefore pleased that the updated Fund will also proactively supports workers before they are made redundant. This will boost proactive support for individuals as they reskill and facilitate them to transition to different job opportunities in their current company or find new employment in strategic and future-oriented sectors even before they lose their jobs. This boosts Europe’s competitiveness and helps to reduce the intensity and cost of unemployment measures. We are particularly pleased that we also ensured that annually, a minimum 40% of the revised Fund will be ringfenced for ‘classic’ cases where workers have already lost their jobs.
However, we do regret that the Fund will end in the next MFF and will work hard to ensure that there will continue to be support for redundant workers in one way or another within the new MFF framework.
Grégory Allione, (Renaissance/France) has represented Renew Europe in the negotiations.
“Losing your job is always a painful ordeal. With the updated EGF, we are not just reacting to job loss, we are proactively empowering and upskilling affected citizens while building resilience and competitiveness. When it comes to European solidarity, let's put the means on the table and raise our ambition.” Grégory Allione Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance”
- 2026-04-27 “Plenary Priorities 27-30 April 2026 — Plenary Priorities 27-30 April 2026
Ensuring Europe’s energy security and competitiveness - We call on the European Commission to urgently implement a unified European strategy to counter rising energy and fertiliser prices.
The escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the resulting turbulence in global energy markets have once again laid bare Europe’s exposure to external shocks.
Europe can no longer rely on switching suppliers as a response to crisis. The structural answer lies in reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels through electrification, clean energy deployment, and deeper market integration.
Each geopolitical shock directly inflates costs for citizens and companies, while increasing uncertainty for investors and industry. Fertiliser production, industrial output, and food security are all exposed to sustained energy volatility.
-We call on EU leaders, following their informal Council, to commit to an immediate, coordinated and deeply integrated European energy strategy.
-Accelerate REPowerEU, scale up renewable and nuclear capacity, and reinforce joint gas purchasing through AggregateEU to reduce imports, strengthen strategic autonomy and shield Europe from geopolitical price shocks.
-Deploy coordinated measures to limit price volatility, modernise grid infrastructure, and improve cross-border energy flows across the Union.
-Keep energy affordable while defending the EU ETS, and accelerate permitting for renewables to support industrial resilience and climate objectives.
-Rapidly implement the Draghi report to mobilise private capital at scale and close the €750+ billion annual investment gap critical to Europe’s competitiveness and energy transition.
Debate : EU strategy in response to the ongoing Middle East crisis, its implications on energy prices and the availability of fertilisers, Wednesday 29 April, 9:00
What a budget for a competitive and liberal Europe should look like - MEPs will adopt their negotiating position on the 2028–2034 EU budget, a roughly €2 trillion package. The Parliament voted for a 10 percent increase compared to the Commission’s July 2025 proposal.
Our group succeeded in embedding its priorities in the adopted position. The strong competitiveness fund - a long-standing demand of centrists, liberals, and democrats - will now become a reality. Core programmes supporting biodiversity and EU health have been safeguarded. Robust rule of law conditionality is secured across the entire budget. The adoption of new revenue streams to maintain a balanced EU budget is a clear red line for the Parliament.
Finally, we secured a concrete budgetary response to the “My Voice, My Choice” campaign, where over 1.2 million citizens from 19 Member States mobilised to demand access to safe abortion at the EU level. Thanks to our efforts, their demands are now reflected in the Parliament’s position.
Debate and vote : Tuesday 28 April
Lebanon: Europe must act, not watch - Lebanon is caught in a conflict it did not choose, squeezed between Israeli military operations that struck Beirut’s neighbourhoods and razed entire villages and now occupy 6 percent of its territory, and decades of Hezbollah's exploitation on behalf of Tehran. The human cost is devastating: over 1.2 million people displaced, more than 2 000 killed and 7 000 injured, massive destruction, and an enormous reconstruction bill for a country already on its knees.
Europe cannot leave Lebanon alone in its despair. Israel's legitimate security concerns cannot justify destruction of this scale. The fragile ceasefire must deliver real outcomes - Israeli withdrawal, and internationally supervised disarmament of Hezbollah. Lebanon is not a peripheral crisis. It is a test of Europe's ability to act in its own neighbourhood.
Debate : Situation in Lebanon : implementation of the ceasefire, support peace efforts and humanitarian access, Wednesday 29 April, 13:00.
Importance of consent-based rape legislation in the EU - The European Parliament votes Wednesday on a report calling on the Commission to bring forward an EU-wide consent-based definition of rape, after a consent-based definition was dropped from the EU's directive on violence against women in 2024 after several member states challenged the EU's legal competence to legislate on rape.
Most sexual violence happens at home, between people who know each other, and most victims do not fight back. A law built around force and resistance leaves those cases in a legal grey area.
The report makes significant advances: it stresses that the freeze and fawn responses must be reflected in law and judicial practice, establishes that consent can be withdrawn at any moment, and calls for non-consensual sexual acts in digital and virtual environments to be legally recognised and prosecuted. Renew Europe strongly supports the report and is co-signing S&D's amendments to reinsert a definition of "rape culture", make training for law enforcement mandatory, and introduce mandatory sexuality education in national school curricula.

This weekend in Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, Jessika Roswall, the European Commissioner responsible for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, called for a phasing-out of forever chemicals known as PFAS. Liberal MEPs now want her to follow through by announcing concrete plans next week.
The trio, MEPs Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy (NL), Martin Hojsík (SK) and Sigrid Friis (DK), point out that the European Parliament’s Environment, Climate and Food Safety Committee will gather on Monday with the Commissioner present. According to them, it could be a ‘perfect opportunity’ to announce the long-awaited and citizen-demanded phasing out PFAS, followed by concrete measures that could be approved by the European Commission on Wednesday.
Part of those concrete measures could be investing in cleaner and safer alternatives and putting a hard deadline on the use of forever chemicals. The Commissioner admits that it has repeatedly been proven how harmful they are to people and the environment.
13 reasons why: In her op-ed, Roswall stated numerous reasons for the phasing out of PFAS. She said the problems associated with it are ‘extensive and well-documented’. She also pointed out that clean-up is costly, that companies need clear rules and that the issue has become a matter of ‘trust and predictability’. According to the liberals in the European Parliament, she can’t list ’13 reasons why’, referring to the popular series, while simultaneously waiting for yet another investigation when action on the most immediate affected consumer sectors could be taken now.”
- 2026-04-22 “Ukraine support loan: relief, but lessons must be learnt — Ukraine support loan: relief, but…
The Renew Europe Group welcomes the unblocking of the 90-billion-euro Ukraine Support Loan, made possible after Hungary lifted its veto. This vital financial lifeline will allow Ukraine to meet its most pressing budgetary needs at a critical moment in the war.
"This unblocking is a relief, but it must not become a precedent, it clearly shows the need of reform. One country should never again be able to block our collective action in support of Ukraine. It is time to end the unanimity rule in foreign affairs, once and for all," Valérie Hayer Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
said Valérie Hayer, President of the Renew Europe Group.
Karin Karlsbro (Liberalerna, Sweden), EP standing rapporteur for the EU financial assistance to Ukraine, stated :
"Europe has finally delivered crucial support to Ukraine. But the delays, under pressure linked to Russian oil, expose serious weaknesses in our decision-making. Europe must be better prepared. We should already be working on the next package, financed through frozen Russian assets. Supporting Ukraine is the most important investment in Europe," Karin Karlsbro Renew Europe MEP, Sweden, Liberalerna
Yet this outcome leaves a bitter aftertaste. For weeks, a single member state held hostage a loan vital to Ukraine's defence through inadmissible blackmail. The EU cannot allow this to happen again.
Relief cannot mean complacency. We must not let up! Despite the 90-billion-euro loan, Ukraine still faces a defence funding gap of 19.6 billion euros in 2026. As European leaders gather in Cyprus, and as Russia exploits the conflict in Iran to intensify its attacks on Ukraine, Renew Europe calls on all member states to maintain and strengthen their support - financially, militarily, and politically.”
- 2026-04-22 “Electrifying EU is the answer — Electrifying EU is the answer
The Renew Europe Group is pleased that the European Commission has taken our priorities onboard in today's announcements. We call for EU leaders to join forces in the informal Council starting tomorrow and commit to the deployment of an immediate, coordinated and deeply integrated European energy strategy.
Since the US-Israeli war with Iran began end of February, Europe’s benchmark gas price has risen sharply, standing at roughly one-third higher than pre-conflict levels.
Renew Europe stands ready to swiftly act together to empower households, businesses and industries with clean, affordable, European energy. We must accelerate the implementation of RePowerEU, scale up our renewable and nuclear capacity and reinforce joint gas purchasing via AggregateEU to reduce imports to both strengthen our climate ambition and strategic autonomy and make Europe more resilient to price shocks caused by the geopolitical volatility and Europe’s dependency on imported fossil fuels.
Furthermore, we need to deploy coordinated measures to limit price volatility, modernise grid infrastructure, and improve cross-border energy flows across the European Union. To maintain affordable energy prices, the EU Emissions Trading System need to be upheld, while the EU member states need to accelerate permitting for renewables to support both industrial resilience and climate objectives.
However, we remind the Council and Commission that public financing alone will not suffice to achieve the clean energy transition. Renew Europe strongly advocates for the rapid implementation of the Draghi report, emphasizing that unlocking massive private investment is essential to address a required €750+ billion annual funding gap for European competitiveness, where the clean energy transition is a cornerstone. Failing to act would endanger our democracy, prosperity and security.
Christophe Grudler (Mouvement Démocrate/France), coordinator for Renew Europe in the Committee of Industry, Research and Energy, says:
"AccelerateEU, yes, but let’s accelerate for real. It is urgent that we keep energy affordable for consumers, but not at the cost of disguised gas subsidies that prolong our energy dependence. The widespread electrification of our grids, our buildings and our transport systems: that is the key to our strategic autonomy. Europe must invest because its sovereignty depends on it."
Pascal Canfin (Renaissance France), coordinator for Renew Europe in the Committee of Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, says:
"In the face of geopolitical crises, starting with the war in the Middle East, Europe can no longer settle for switching gas and oil suppliers. The real answer is to structurally reduce our dependence on fossil imports — and that means electrification. It is time to recognise electrification and decarbonisation for what they truly are: core security instruments."”
- 2026-04-20 “Elections in Bulgaria: the risk of another trojan horse — Elections in Bulgaria: the risk of…
Renew Europe Group congratulates “We continue the change” on their results at the parliamentary elections. Their third place and continuous efforts to restore rule of law and maintain Bulgaria’s pro-European path position them as the only genuine pro-European and anti-corruption democratic voice for the Bulgarian citizens. We stand for a Bulgaria that is a reliable, values-driven partner within the European Union not a source of instability or democratic backsliding.
“Rule of law and pro-European policies are inseparable, and we will continue supporting or partners in their efforts for a strong Bulgaria in strong Europe. We have seen in the past that corruption, the rule of law and Russian influence go hand in hand. They nurture one another, and the fight against them is also inseparable – anti-corruption policies, integrity and pro-European efforts” Valérie Hayer Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
, said Renew Group president Valerie Hayer.
Liberals and Democrats also stand in support of everyone defending democracy and the integrity of the elections process, justice and restoring the rule of law in times of elections. Renew Europe Group leader Valerie Hayer was the first to understand the significance of these elections for the country’s future, travelling to Sofia and met independent experts on fair elections and rule of law and stood with those defending democracy on the ground.
”Bulgaria matters. It is not at the periphery but at the heart of the EU defence architecture - on the external border, it is strategically positioned on Europe’s front line. Bulgaria is an important ammunition producer helping Ukraine. Radev is likely to pose risks to that supply. Countries already supporting Ukraine would need to fill the gap left by Bulgaria, which is a significant producer of Soviet-caliber ammunition. This could tighten stockpiles across Europe and slow delivery timelines, especially for artillery shells and small arms rounds that match older systems still widely used by Ukrainian force",
Nikola Minchev MEP commented:
“Just a week after Orban was defeated we have to make sure there is no second trojan horse in the EU. With these election results, “We continue the change” will be the main opposition factor and a guard for the anti-corruption reform and pro-European future Bulgaria needs. “ Nikola Minchev Renew Europe MEP, Bulgaria, We continue the change – Democratic Bulgaria
Liberals and democrats will keep fighting to ensure democratic institutions, rule of law, equal rights and prosperity are in place across Europe. These are Renew Europe Group’s leader sustained engagement on rule of law, democracy and integrity, including a previous fact-finding mission to Sofia.”
- 2026-04-16 “Secure Today, Protect Tomorrow: Renew Europe Group outlines way forward for Europol — Secure Today, Protect Tomorrow:…
With criminal networks crossing borders as never before Europol, the agency connecting and supporting national police forces around the EU, needs strengthening. That is the core message of the Renew Europe position paper presented today by MEPs Sophie Wilmès (Mouvement Réformateur, Belgium) and Raquel García Hermida-van der Walle (D66, Netherlands).
The paper comes ahead of a proposal by the European Commission on the new mandate for Europol. The Renew Europe Group wants to scale up Europol’s operational and tactical capacities to match the growing complexity of Europe’s security challenges, and outlines six areas where progress is possible and necessary: Threats : making sure Europol has the competence to act on hybrid threats, like cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, to tackle drug trafficking, money laundering and terrorism; Technology : improving the Agency’s use of technology, including AI, in fighting cross-border crime and countering serious harmful online activities; Training : investing in Europol’s human capital and that of national forces, by developing a European Police Academy and promoting cross-border police cooperation projects; Teamwork : boosting Europol’s role as the EU’s centre of excellence for data analysis, and establishing more structured cooperation between the Agency and key EU bodies; Transparency and data: empowering Europol to both access and contribute to EU-level databases, in parallel with improving parliamentary oversight on its workings; and Total resources, addressing the structural under-funding of the Agency in the next Multiannual Financial Framework.
Security is one of the top priorities for European citizens, and rightly so. Feeling protected is a fundamental prerequisite for the exercise of individual freedoms and for safeguarding our liberal democratic model. This is why we at Renew Europe, are fully committed to this issue. As security challenges cannot be addressed with each Member State acting on its own, we call for a strong and coordinated European response. Our position paper aims to significantly strengthen Europol’s analytical, operational, and technological capacities, enabling the agency to keep pace with evolving threats and to respond to a new reality in which crime increasingly transcends physical borders. Sophie Wilmès Renew Europe MEP, Belgium, Mouvement Réformateur
The world has changed and we need Europol to change with it. When criminals cross borders and threats move from off- to online, so should police cooperation. At the same time, power can never go unchecked. With a stronger mandate, parliamentary oversight should be strengthened as well. Raquel García Hermida-Van Der Walle Renew Europe MEP, Netherlands, Democraten 66

- 2026-04-15 “What a proper EU budget should look like — What a proper EU budget should…
Today, the European Parliament’s budgets committee adopted its position on the EU’s seven-year budget.
Renew Europe is especially pleased with the outcome. Here are our four key victories:
1/ A Competitiveness Fund, at last
This has been a long-standing demand from liberals, centrists, and democrats: the next EU budget must include a significant share of funding dedicated to regaining Europe’s competitive edge.
Fabienne Keller (Renaissance/France), Renew Europe’s negotiator for the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), states:
“This new fund sends a clear political message: the next EU budget will focus on addressing tomorrow’s challenges—innovation, research, health, and youth. The fund also introduces a healthy dose of flexibility. When it comes to strategic investments, EU money should go where it makes the most impact, not simply where it used to flow.” Fabienne Keller Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
2/ Rule of Law: a consolidated liberal victory
This was a key achievement for our group during the last mandate: if the rule of law is breached in a Member State, EU funds should not end up in the pockets of autocrats and their cronies. This principle is consolidated in the EP position. No going back!
Lucia Yar (Progresívne Slovensko (Slovakia), Renew Europe’s coordinator on budget matters, says:
“It’s not because Orbán has lost in Hungary that illiberal tendencies are eradicated entirely. We still have to deal with Slovak pro-Russian prime-minister Fico for instance. Autocrats are not like Dodo birds and other extinct species: it’s not because they’re gone now that they can’t come back later. That is why we welcome the fact that the MFF report strengthens the protection of Rule of Law principles and protection of European taxpayers’ money.” Lucia Yar Renew Europe MEP, Slovakia, Progresívne Slovensko
3/ Putting our money where our mouth is on gender equality
More than 1.2 million citizens across 19 Member States mobilised to demand access to safe abortion at the EU level through the “My Voice, My Choice” campaign. Their demands are now reflected in the MFF report.
Lucia Yar adds:
“I could not have let 1.2 million people down. We cannot simply welcome such an act of civic mobilization in favour of safe abortion when the cameras are rolling and then shy away from providing stable and predictable support. Today, the Parliament ensured that money allocated via ESF+ programme will be set aside for Member States choosing to participate in providing abortion care to people who cannot access it in their home country.” Lucia Yar Renew Europe MEP, Slovakia, Progresívne Slovensko
4/ No EU revenues, No EU budget
The report adopted today is clear: our consent to the MFF is conditional on the adoption of new revenue streams. We do not want Member States to pay more into the EU budget. The only way to avoid burdening national treasuries is for the Commission to propose new EU levies, on tech giants for instance.
Fabienne Keller, Renew Europe’s negotiator for the revenue side of the budget, concludes:
“You can be sure that we will not consent to an EU budget that lacks the necessary EU revenues to sustain itself. It’s a matter of basic financial prudence.” Fabienne Keller Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
Next step: Plenary vote during the last week of April.”
- 2026-04-12 “Hungary's turning point: EU ready to help restore democracy — Hungary's turning point: EU ready…
Renew Europe welcomes results in Hungary indicating that the Tisza party is projected to defeat Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, following an unprecedented mobilisation of Hungarian voters.
The exceptionally high turnout sends a clear message: Hungarians are reclaiming their democratic voice and choosing a European future.
Valérie Hayer, President of Renew Europe, said:
“Hungarian voters have chosen hope and a new political beginning. They have demonstrated that even a deeply entrenched system can be challenged. The responsibility now is to turn this result into real change — for a pro-European Hungary that is a constructive and reliable member of both the EU and NATO. We have clear expectations: a new leadership must rebuild democratic institutions, deliver genuine rule-of-law reforms and establish robust anti-corruption mechanisms and support Ukraine. Tonight, we have one winner over all; the Hungarian citizens. With their outstanding record -high participation they showed how vibrant and defensive a democracy can be.” Valérie Hayer Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
“The lessons from 16 years of the Orbán regime are clear. The European Union must rethink unanimity rules, limit veto powers in sensitive areas and equip itself with stronger tools to defend its integrity. If Europe is to move forward, we must move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. In key areas, like-minded Member States should be able to advance together. A multi-speed Europe can no longer be a taboo.”
Sophie Wilmès, Vice-President of the European Parliament and Chair of the working group on Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights (DRFMG), added:
“This result shows that Orbán’s illiberal, authoritarian model is neither inevitable nor irreversible. The Hungarian people have had enough of fear, corruption, isolation, and the steady erosion of their freedoms. The political change they chose carries the promise of a project grounded in respect for Europe, the rule of law and our democratic values. Restoring democracy will require significant effort and sustained political will. The damage done is substantial. The EU, its institutions and Renew Europe in particular are strong allies in this ambitious endeavour. We stand with the Hungarian people—full-fledged European citizens—as we always have.” Sophie Wilmès Renew Europe MEP, Belgium, Mouvement Réformateur
Renew Europe stresses that this result shows the model of so-called “illiberal democracy” can be rolled back — despite entrenched power structures and external backing.
After 16 years of systemic erosion of checks and balances, the Hungarian people have demonstrated that democratic change remains possible.
At the same time, the challenges ahead will be significant. Over more than a decade, Fidesz has embedded its influence across Hungary’s political and institutional system through cardinal laws requiring supermajorities to amend.
Key institutions, including the constitutional court, the prosecutor general’s office and the media authority remain shaped by loyalists.
Despite likely interference from Russia and a corrupt electoral system, the Hungarian people have turned out in huge numbers for a different future. It is incumbent on all of us who believe in a free Europe to stand with them.
Renew Europe calls on European partners to step up support for Hungary in restoring the rule of law, rebuilding independent institutions and fully rejoining the community of democratic European states.”

Renew Europe Members of the European Parliament Cynthia Ní Mhurchú and Andreas Glück are attending the annual Convention of the Liberal Party of Canada in Montreal, in a push intended to underline our group’s belief in the growing strategic importance of EU–Canada relations.
Renew Europe believes a new alliance of democracies is needed in a changing world. The MEPs’ visit comes at a time of increasing geopolitical uncertainty, where trade, security and political alliances are undergoing rapid change. Against this backdrop, the two MEPs stressed that Canada has emerged as one of Europe’s most reliable and like-minded partners.
“Canada is not just a partner, it is becoming EU’s most important strategic ally. In a more fragmented world, we need trusted countries that share our commitment to open societies, fair trade and multilateral cooperation. CETA is delivering, but more must be done to advertise its benefits and EU countries have to step up to the plate and finally ratify it.” Cynthia Ní Mhurchú Member of the European Parliament (Fianna Fáil/Ireland)
The relationship between the European Union and Canada is anchored in the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which has significantly boosted trade and investment flows across the Atlantic.
However, both MEPs emphasised that the partnership must now evolve further to reflect new economic and security realities.
“CETA remains one of the most advanced trade agreements in the world, but it should be seen as a starting point, not the end point. We need to deepen cooperation on digital, industrial and security issues. Furthermore, Canada can be a key strategic partner to further diversify our energy supply and build energy partnerships for the future. This year’s EU–Canada Summit must aim high.” Andreas Glück Member of the European Parliament (Freie Demokratische Partei/Germany)
At the congress, MEPs highlighted the importance of completing the ratification of CETA across all EU Member States, as well as strengthening cooperation in areas such as defence, cybersecurity and resilient supply chains.
Their participation in the Convention reflects Renew Europe’s commitment to strengthening ties with key democratic partners and reinforcing a rules-based international order.
“Europe and Canada have both the capacity and the responsibility to shape global standards. By working more closely together, we can deliver stability and opportunity in an increasingly uncertain world.” Cynthia Ní Mhurchú Member of the European Parliament (Fianna Fáil/Ireland)
The visit takes place ahead of the next EU–Canada summit later this year, which is expected to focus on deepening economic ties, enhancing security cooperation and advancing a more strategic partnership.”
- 2026-04-09 “Strengthening Europe's resilience and preparedness: Renew Europe calls for dedicated funds in the next MFF — Strengthening Europe's resilience…
The next Multiannual Financial Framework must include dedicated funds for crisis preparedness and response for cities on the frontline. This was the main takeaway at yesterday's event "Cities on the Front Line: The Role of European Cities in Protecting Citizens During Crises," organised by the Renew Europe Group, which brought together city officials, public health experts, civil protection authorities, politicians and specialists to explore how to better equip cities and help Europeans build preparedness and resilience.
"City administrations are one of the most important actors on the ground when responding to crises. If we want a secure and resilient Europe, the next EU budget needs to provide them with more support and a bigger role in the design of crisis preparedness plans.", said MEP Jana Toom. Jana Toom Renew Europe MEP, Estonia
From the COVID-19 crisis to recent drone threats and drawing on best practices from cities such as Vilnius, participants agreed: the role of cities as vital partners in enhancing Europe’s security, is not always sufficiently recognised nor integrated in EU policy design and the cost of inaction is too high. This is why Renew Europe is pushing to ensure that both the Union Civil Protection Mechanism and EU support for health emergency preparedness and response reflect this urgency. This includes more financial support for capacity building in urban areas.
"€208 billion in four years. That is what Europe paid for not being ready. Investing in resilience is investing in our sovereignty - and it starts with citizens, not institutions. I am calling for a European Resilience Week: a yearly moment to train, to test, to prepare. With a dedicated budget and a 72-hour response standard, Europe can lead." Grégory Allione Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
said MEP Grégory Allione.
MEP Olivier Chastel added:
When a crisis starts, it doesn't hit only a state - it hits a street, a neighbourhood, a city. The COVID-19 crisis has shown that pandemic management starts at the local level. Building a true European culture of crisis preparedness requires integrating the health, environmental and civil dimensions, and strengthening coordination from the European level down to cities, which are at the heart of the response." Olivier Chastel Renew Europe MEP, Belgium, Mouvement Réformateur
Renew Europe is also pushing for three concrete priorities: interoperable alert systems, better protection of hospitals and critical infrastructure against cyberattacks, and the creation of a European firefighting capability. Every European should receive a clear and reliable alert on their phone the moment a crisis hits no matter where they are in the EU. Hospitals and essential infrastructure must be shielded from cyberattacks. Europe needs its own firefighting capability so we can respond together, faster and stronger. The next steps include closer cooperation between cities and the EU institutions, notably by ensuring that the EU budget together with the upcoming EU Civil Protection Mechanism can enhance the Union’s resilience to future crises.
The event brought together MEPs, EU Commissioner Hadja Lahbib, city officials from Vilnius and Helsinki, public health experts from the Basque Country and Brussels, and senior representatives from HERA and DG ECHO, all moderated by Sean O'Curneen, Renew Europe Secretary General of the European Committee of the Regions.”

Over the past 3 days, Members of Renew Europe, liberal think-tanks and foundations met with their African counterparts in Rabat for the “RENEWPAC” summit.
The meeting gathered 300 participants from 47 countries. They discussed security, democracy, migration, energy, AI, supply chain stability, demography, health and gender equality. The key messages participants took home are: Europe should treat Africa like a partner—not a problem. And Africa doesn't need aid, it needs trade.
MEP Valérie Hayer, president of Renew Europe, said: “The partnership between Europe and Africa will be pivotal for the decades to come. Our destinies are interlinked. We have shared interests and shared values. Renew is committed to make EU-Africa relations a pilar of its political project.”
Sidi Touré, Côte d'Ivoire minister and African co-chair of the summit said: “Our relations must not be defined only by our past but by the future we want to build together. This kind of summit helps build trust, mutual respect and understanding. All too often Africa is talked about through the prism of its challenges. We must talk about Africa in terms of opportunities. ”
MEP Jan-Christoph Oetjen, the European co-chair of the summit, said: “If one listens to the European Left, Africa is a place we must simply help and apologise to. If one listens to the Right, Africa is a problem to be managed and a source of migration on our doorstep. We, European liberals, believe that Africa is an opportunity and a future to be built among equal partners.”
He concluded: “The future cannot be built on outdated narratives. The era of paternalism, dependency and lamentation must be behind us.”
What is RENEWPAC? RENEWPAC stands for Renew Pacific Africa and Caribbean. It is a network of politicians. This was the 5th edition of the RENEWPAC. The meeting was co-hosted in Rabat by the Moroccan Authenticity and Modernity Party and Renew Europe. Such a structured cooperation among liberals from both continent is unique. No other political force in Europe has such a platform for collaboration among sister parties across the two continents.”
- 2026-03-26 “Customs reform: ending impunity — Customs reform: ending impunity
Tonight EU lawmakers struck a deal on the long-awaited EU customs reform.
Context. Cheap imports from China have spiraled out of control. In 2024, 4.6 billion small parcels (valued under €150) were imported into the EU. This is double the 2023 figure (2.3 billion), which itself was twice the number recorded in 2022 (1.4 billion). We have an exponential problem on our hands, says Jeannette Baljeu (VVD, Netherlands), our lead MEP on this file.
Many of these imports have also flouted the law. Random checks revealed that 90% of the products failed to comply with EU standards, including critical safety regulations on dangerous chemicals in items such as children’s toys. That figure is only 8% for traditional retailers.
This reform, agreed today, aims to put an end to these abuses, most notably by holding platforms accountable for the products they sell.
Baljeu explains: “Today, if a customer buys a toxic toy, they have no recourse. Legally, they are considered the ‘importers’ of the goods they purchase. This system is fundamentally flawed for e-commerce, as consumers cannot realistically ensure compliance. With this reform, we will make platforms like Temu and Shein the responsible importers of the goods they sell to our consumers. Platforms will no longer be able to wash their hands of their products—and we won’t have to wash ours twice after handling them." Jeannette Baljeu Renew Europe MEP, Netherlands, Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie
The reform will kick in in 2028 so platform have the time to finally put in place the necessary due diligence mechanisms on the products they sell. MEPs also succeeded in securing heavier sanctions for platforms attempting to circumvent the law.”
- 2026-03-26 “Historic anti-corruption law adopted: Liberals and Democrats increase protection for citizens and democracy — Historic anti-corruption law…
“This law is about a Europe where journalists can work without fear, and where public systems serve citizens, not insiders. This directive brings us closer to a Europe where corruption cannot decide who gets a job, a permit, or justice. A Europe where citizens can trust their institutions again. That is the Europe we want to build.” “This law is historic. Corruption has caused journalists to be silenced, citizens to be killed, lives cut short. Behind every statistic is a name, a story, and a future denied. Corruption also drains billions from our economies, erodes trust in government, and undermines democracy itself. Left unchecked, it threatens the very foundation of our Union. - 2026-03-26 “EU-US Turnberry deal: Renew Europe backs Parliament's firm mandate — EU-US Turnberry deal: Renew Europe…
As the European Parliament prepares to vote on its mandate for trilogue negotiations on the two legislative proposals implementing the tariff elements of the EU-US Turnberry framework agreement, Renew Europe announces its support for the position adopted by the Committee on International Trade (INTA) on 19 March. A key priority for our group throughout this process is to ensure the deal delivers real predictability and stability - for businesses, workers and citizens.
Renew Europe's message is unambiguous: the EU will move forward - but on the basis of fairness and clarity. The INTA position significantly strengthens the Commission's original proposal by making it Trump-proofed: no higher tariffs, no more threats of tariffs, and no security threats against EU member states.
At the heart of Parliament's mandate is a sunrise clause ensuring that EU tariff preferences will only take effect once the United States has effectively fulfilled its own commitments. Parliament also strengthens the important suspension clause, should Washington backtrack - by imposing or threatening with new tariffs or undermining the terms of the deal - the agreement can be suspended. The Parliament has also insisted on stronger protections for the steel, aluminium and their derivatives, which remain disproportionately exposed under current US trade policy.
Karin Karlsbro, (Liberalerna, Sweden), Renew Europe shadow rapporteur on this file said :
“Transatlantic trade relations must be built on mutual respect. We have not forgotten Greenland, the threats and the blackmail. Europe must be prepared to set conditions for the transatlantic relations moving onward. That's what we do through this vote, by Trump proofing the Turnberry tariff agreements. That means: no higher tariffs, no more threats of tariffs, and no security threats. By approving this vote we are doing what we can to provide ourselves and European businesses with as much stability as possible under the circumstances.” Karin Karlsbro Renew Europe MEP, Sweden, Liberalerna
Sophie Wilmès, (MR, Belgium), Vice-Chair of the EP US Delegation, stated :
“One could hardly say that the Turnberry agreement is balanced, but we are ready to accept it if it provides our businesses with stability and predictability in their trade relations with the United States. However, as the U.S. administration lacks either the capacity or the willingness to guarantee even this minimum, it is up to us, Europeans, to put our own safeguards in place to protect ourselves from the chaos of U.S. tariff policies, and even from certain threats. This is exactly what the Parliament is doing today through this vote.” Sophie Wilmès Renew Europe MEP, Belgium, Mouvement Réformateur
Renew Europe's support for the INTA mandate does not amount to a blank cheque for the final agreement. The outcome of the interinstitutional negotiations with the Council will determine the Group's ultimate position.”

Renew Europe today welcomes Lukas Sieper MEP (Partei des Fortschritts, DE) to its ranks in the European Parliament.
Lukas’s arrival brings fresh momentum and a new generation’s energy to the pro-European centre at a pivotal moment for the Union. Renew Europe continues to grow as the political home for bold, forward-looking reformers determined to modernise Europe’s economy, defend democratic freedoms and connect European politics more directly with citizens’ everyday concerns.
Commenting on his decision, Lukas Sieper MEP said:
“I am delighted to become part of the Renew Europe Group. Europe needs a confident political centre that stands up for European values of *pluralistic* democracy and equality of opportunity. I look forward to working closely with colleagues to help shape effective European solutions to today’s challenges.”
Valérie Hayer, President of Renew Europe, said:
“Lukas Sieper strengthens our political family with a youthful energy and determination. Renew Europe continues to gather those who believe in a forward-looking, reformist Europe, one that protects its values while delivering prosperity and security for its citizens.” Valérie Hayer Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance”

Renew Europe today called for stronger European action to address legal and enforcement gaps allowing the misuse of artificial intelligence to generate non-consensual intimate content, following the widely reported case involving German television presenter Collien Fernandes.
Valerie Hayer, Renew Europe president said:
"This case is deeply disturbing and highlights a growing form of digital violence that our laws are not yet equipped to stop. Across the European Union, victims are not equally protected and perpetrators can still exploit gaps between national systems. This must change. We need a european approach to secure same protection for victims and ensure that those responsible are held accountable everywhere in the EU.” Valérie Hayer Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
The appalling allegations, involving the creation and distribution of fake online profiles and AI-generated nude images, have reignited concerns about the rapid spread of “nudification” technologies and deepfake abuse across Europe. The case underlines the urgent need for clearer EU-wide rules to prevent digital sexual violence, protect victims and ensure accountability for perpetrators.
In a digital policy paper adopted last year, adopted last year, Renew Europe warned of the urgent need for clear prohibitions on AI systems that nudify individuals or enable the generation of non-consensual sexualised content, stressing that such practices undermine human dignity, privacy and fundamental rights, particularly for women and minors.
The political group also pointed to persistent loopholes at European level, including fragmented criminal frameworks across Member States, insufficient safeguards on generative AI developers, delays in removing illegal content from online platforms and weak cross-border enforcement mechanisms.
Michael McNamara MEP (Renew Europe, Ireland), European Parliament co-rapporteur on the AI Omnibus, said:
“The case reported in Germany is a stark reminder that digital violence is real violence. AI must never be used to humiliate, exploit or endanger people. As Parliament prepares to vote on the AI Omnibus this week, closing legal loopholes — including by introducing an explicit ban on nudification applications — is essential to protect victims, provide legal certainty and restore trust in new technologies.” Michael Mcnamara Renew Europe MEP, Ireland
Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová MEP (Renew Europe, Slovakia), said:
“Europe must ensure that innovation goes hand in hand with responsibility. We need clearer obligations on developers of generative AI tools, stronger cross-border cooperation and faster removal of harmful deepfake content. Citizens must know that digital rules are enforceable and that perpetrators cannot hide behind technological complexity.” Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová Renew Europe MEP, Slovakia, Progresívne Slovensko
Abir Al-Sahlani MEP (Renew Europe, Sweden), FEMM coordinator, added:
Women are disproportionately targeted by deepfake abuse, which can have devastating psychological, social, and professional consequences. Tackling non-consensual nudifiers is part of the fight against gender-based violence. The EU must ensure victims have rapid remedies and real protection.” Abir Al-Sahlani Renew Europe MEP, Sweden, Centerpartiet
Renew Europe stressed that the upcoming parliamentary vote on the AI Omnibus is a key opportunity to strengthen safeguards against abusive AI uses while maintaining a framework that supports innovation, simplification and competitiveness for European companies.
The group will continue to push for harmonised EU action, stronger platform accountability and effective enforcement tools to ensure that new technologies serve citizens and uphold democratic values.”

The Renew Europe Group welcomes today's conclusion of negotiations for an ambitious EU-Australia free trade agreement and the signing of a security and defence partnership - a powerful signal that Europe is building the alliances it needs in an uncertain world.
This agreement is a major step in the EU's strategy to diversify its trade relationships and strengthen its strategic autonomy. Australia is a like-minded partner that shares our commitment to multilateralism, the rule of law, and a rules-based international order. At a time of acute geopolitical competition, deepening ties with Indo-Pacific democracies is not just economically smart - it is a strategic necessity.
Karin Karlsbro (Liberalerna, Sweden), Renew coordinator for the Committee on trade (INTA) stated:
“Europe cannot afford to close its doors. By finalising the trade agreement with Australia, we show that cooperation, not protectionism, is the way forward. Open trade between democracies is Europe’s strongest answer to global uncertainty.” Karin Karlsbro Renew Europe MEP, Sweden, Liberalerna
Barry Cowen (Fianna Fáil, Ireland), member of the Delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand, emphasised :
"I welcome this agreement as a positive step forward in strengthening the EU’s relationship with a trusted and like-minded partner. For Ireland and across the EU, agriculture is central, and this deal creates new opportunities for agri-food exports, building on our existing €2.3 billion trade surplus with Australia, while maintaining important safeguards for sensitive sectors like beef, lamb and dairy. It shows that when there is a genuine level playing field, European agriculture can compete and succeed." Barry Cowen Renew Europe MEP, Ireland, Fianna Fáil Party
The trade agreement opens significant opportunities across key European industries. EU exports are expected to grow by up to 33% over the next decade, with the automotive sector set to benefit particularly strongly - tariff elimination is projected to boost motor vehicle exports by up to 52%.
On agriculture, the EU already runs a trade surplus with Australia - this trade agreement builds on that advantage, opening further market access for EU exporters while carefully calibrated protections for sensitive agricultural sectors and robust safeguard mechanisms ensure that European farmers' interests remain fully defended. Renew Europe also welcomes the binding commitments on ILO core labour standards and the Paris Agreement, which guarantee that greater trade goes hand in hand with higher social and environmental standards.
The EU has also secured access to Australian critical raw materials - lithium, manganese, aluminium - reducing our dependence on single suppliers, building more resilient supply chains, and lessening our vulnerability to geopolitical coercion.
The security and defence partnership complements these economic ties with a robust institutional framework for cooperation on cyber security, hybrid threats, maritime security and emerging technologies - delivering security through partnership.
Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP, Germany), chair of the committee on defence and security (SEDE), commented :
“The security and defence chapter of the EU–Australia agreement and the whole agreement itself is a timely and strategic step forward, particularly in times of geopolitical turmoil, when long-standing partnerships are being severely shaken and existing alliances are being called into question. In a more unstable world, like-minded partners must deepen cooperation not only on trade, but also on resilience, defence industry and security. This agreement shows that Europe is serious about building strong, reliable partnerships in the Indo-Pacific.” Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann Renew Europe MEP, Germany, Freie Demokratische Partei
With negotiations now concluded, Renew will take its time to scrutinise the agreement.”

Renew Europe is deeply concerned about reports that have emerged about possible foreign interference in the elections process in Slovenia. This is not the first time we see attempted interference in a European election and it marks a worrying trend, which demands a European level investigation and response. We call for a truly independent investigation, cooperation between institutions and immediate action. Without fair and free national elections, European democracy is under threat.
Renew Europe président Valérie Hayer said:
“Elections must be free from any manipulation, domestic or foreign. What we are seeing is very concerning. The indications pointing towards Janez Jansa are serious and need a full, transparent investigation, including a European perspective. This is not just about Slovenia, it is a European issue. We must protect European democracy and the rule of law.” Valérie Hayer Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
Renew Europe has taken the lead in the fight to tackle foreign interference and currently chairs the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield (EUDS).
Helmut Brandstätter, EUDS coordinator said:
“I intend to raise this issue on a EU level in the committee. This is yet another wake up call for Europe. Decisive action against foreign information manipulation, strengthening platform accountability, and safeguarding elections on an EU-level must be our main priority. This is a question of our sovereignty and security. Our efforts for a centralised and enforceable framework that truly protects citizens, election integrity across Europe will continue.” Helmut Brandstätter Renew Europe MEP, Austria, NEOS – Das Neue Österreich
Renew Europe is clear - the fundamental rights of citizens to vote and choose and sovereign and must remain so.”
- 2026-03-18 “Renew delivers nudification ban and simplified AI Rules — Renew delivers nudification ban…
Renew Europe today welcomed a decisive step forward in protecting citizens online after European Parliament committees backed an explicit ban on AI “nudification” applications in their position on the Digital Omnibus on artificial intelligence. The vote in the Committees on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) and on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) reflects growing concern over the misuse of generative AI tools to create non-consensual intimate images. Recent scandals involving AI systems capable of producing sexualised deepfakes have intensified calls for clear rules to prevent harm and uphold fundamental rights. In a policy paper adopted last year on artificial intelligence, Renew Europe has repeatedly stressed the need for a clear prohibition on AI systems that digitally undress individuals or generate non-consensual sexualised content, warning that such tools undermine human dignity, privacy and safety, particularly for women and minors.
Michael McNamara MEP , European Parliament co-rapporteur on the Digital Omnibus on AI, said:
“Today Parliament has drawn a red line. AI must never be used to humiliate, exploit or endanger people. The Parliament’s position, for the first time, calls for an explicit ban on nudifier applications. These tools inflict real harm on real people. This was not in the Commission’s original proposal, but Renew pushed for it and we got it over the line. Today, as co-legislators, the European Parliament is sending a clear message that this is a priority.”
Renew Europe has worked to strike the right balance in the Digital Omnibus, focusing on an AI framework to support innovation, simplification and easier procedures for SMCs.
Svenja Hahn MEP , IMCO shadow rapporteur, said:
“The parliamentary position on the AI Omnibus is a major win for European businesses and jobs. By ending unnecessary double regulation of industrial AI, we are cutting red tape, strengthening legal certainty, and giving our companies the freedom to innovate and stay competitive. This has been my priority for the negotiations and I will continue to push in the trilogue to ensure this pragmatic approach is upheld across member states.””
- 2026-03-11 “Renew Europe Group: Of course tackling child abuse and privacy go together! — Renew Europe Group: Of course…
The Renew Europe group welcomes the extension of the derogation of the e-Privacy Directive to tackle child sexual abuse online.
This is already the third extension, since the Council has lost time in ongoing negotiations for a permanent legal framework, so Renew MEPs refused to sign off another simple prolongation but instead successfully strove to add certain conditions, limiting technology to where it is strictly necessary. The scope is reduced to child sexual abuse material (CSAM) that is already known and to users identified by judicial authorities, while strictly guaranteeing that end-to-end encryption remains off limits.
“While tech companies now have the potential tools to make the Stasi blush, we are drawing a clear line for searching child sexual abuse online. We want to ensure end-to-end encryption stays locked and any potential scanning remains strictly focused on known illegal material and users. This is the best way forward: Europe can protect children from predators without eavesdropping on every citizen.” Irena Joveva Renew Europe MEP, Slovenia, Gibanje Svoboda
“Today we take our responsibility. This is not a matter of wanting to, but of having to. Without this extension, a legal gap threatened to arise and internet giants would stop detecting online child abuse, and that means no reports, no investigations, and therefore no protection for our children. With this extension, companies can voluntarily detect illegal material but without chat control of encrypted messages. Is this ideal? No, but it is because of our Member States that valuable time was lost. Now, we must move forward, and we will continue to insist on a permanent regulation in which we impose concrete and clear obligations on internet giants to detect online sexual abuse, with strong safeguards and without chat control.” Hilde Vautmans Renew Europe MEP, Belgium, Anders”
- 2026-03-11 “Middle East escalation: Europe is a global power - it must act like one — Middle East escalation: Europe is…
The strikes launched on 28 February by Israel and the United States have opened a dangerous new phase in the Middle East - one that Europe neither sought nor controls, but whose consequences are already felt by every European citizen.
But foremost, Renew Europe reaffirms its solidarity with the Iranian people and our support for their right to determine their own future through a democratic transition. Let's remember that the Iranian people have already paid an unbearable price. Thousands of protesters, young men and women, have been massacred or executed for daring to demand freedom. They have been living this tragedy for years, with no end in sight. It is to them, first and foremost, that Europe's support must go.
Iran has retaliated against neighbouring countries hosting US bases. A hardliner has been appointed to succeed Ali Khamenei. There is no sign of de-escalation. This conflict may last - and it is quite clear that there is no strategy for what comes next.
The costs of that absence are real and immediate. The Strait of Hormuz - through which 20% of global oil and gas trade passes - is effectively paralysed, driving up energy prices and squeezing household budgets across the EU. The Islamic regime has mined the Strait of Hormuz, threatening energy supplies and driving up prices. Europe, with 100 minesweepers against only four for the US, must act : we call for robust protection of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, including through temporary shipping insurance and military means.
MEP Bart Groothuis (VVD, Netherlands), Renew Europe shadow rapporteur for Iran, stated :
"Securing freedom of movement and freedom of navigation is a European strategic imperative. That requires three practical steps: calling on member states to provide national guarantees for extreme war-related losses to vessels and cargo so insurers keep ships covered and ensuring EU budget rules to allow such emergency measures, deploying naval escorts to protect crews and vessels, and making clear to markets - through coordination with shipping, insurance and energy companies - that Europe stands behind continued navigation. Whether you think this is Europe's war or not, its consequences are – so deal with a strategic reality." Bart Groothuis Renew Europe MEP, Netherlands, Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie
This crisis has exposed the cost of Europe's strategic drift. Renew Europe urges the EU to accelerate energy independence, strengthen defence readiness, and act as a shaper of global events - not a bystander watching them unfold.
Renew Europe calls on the EU to speak with one voice and pursue immediate de-escalation through full diplomatic engagement - from a position of strength, not passivity.
MEP Hilde Vautmans, Renew Europe foreign affairs coordinator, said:
"Europe must show it stands with its citizens and businesses: bring down energy costs, end internal fragmentation, strengthen our own energy supply, and finally act with a clear Iran strategy - because the real question is not what others will do, but what Europe itself will do." Hilde Vautmans Renew Europe MEP, Belgium, Anders

- 2026-03-11 “When women lose out, Europe loses out: end the pay and pension gaps — When women lose out, Europe loses…
Following today’s adoption of the an own-initiative report on the gender pay and pension gap in the EU, the Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament is calling leading the call for stronger EU action to strengthen women’s economic empowerment across the Union.
Despite the EU’s long-standing principle of equal pay for equal work, women in the EU still earn on average around 12% less per hour than men. The gap tends to widen over time due to career breaks, motherhood and part-time work, and ultimately translates into a gender pension gap of around 25%, leaving many older women at greater risk of poverty.
With the Gender Equality Strategy 2026–2030 now presented, Renew Europe welcomes the Commission’s commitment to tackling pay discrimination and supporting the implementation of the Pay Transparency Directive and a promised toolkit on gender-neutral job evaluation and classification which the report calls for, but stresses that a dedicated EU action plan to eradicate the gender pay and pension gaps is still needed.
Renew Europe also calls for the full implementation of the Work-Life Balance Directive, including the promotion of non-transferable and adequately paid paternity and parental leave, which are essential to addressing the unequal distribution of care responsibilities that continues to drive pay inequalities. Renew Europe welcomes the European Care Deal which will be crucial to address gender inequalities in both formal and informal care.
"I am proud of the end result of the report, which according to Renew priorities aims to achieve true gender equality. It confronts persistent pay and pension gaps, while tackling the imbalance in unpaid care and domestic work which disproportionately falls on women. It sets out actionable measures at EU and MS level, to secure equality, economic independence, work–life balance, and equal opportunities — foundations for justice, resilient society, and shared prosperity. Yet, the actions and measures following the report will be crucial, as equality depends on concrete actions that will follow." Irena Joveva Renew Europe MEP, Slovenia, Gibanje Svoboda
“Women’s economic equality is essential for a fair and competitive Europe. To close the gender pay and pension gaps, we must address their root causes from the unequal distribution of care responsibilities to the persistent undervaluation of work in female-dominated sectors and the continued underrepresentation of women in leadership and STEM. Ensuring fair pay and equal opportunities for women will strengthen Europe’s labour markets, support productivity, and help our economies reach their full potential.” Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová Renew Europe MEP, Slovakia, Progresívne Slovensko”
- 2026-03-10 “Single market, a love letter — Single market, a love letter
There is momentum behind showing the EU’s single market some love.
Next week, the European Council will be dedicated to competitiveness. Today, the European Parliament debated ways to re-energise the single market.
The single market is in dire need of attention. Trade between member states as a share of EU GDP dropped from 23.5 per cent in 2023 to 22 per cent in 2024. Barriers to trade among EU countries represents around 45% tariffs on manufacturing and 110% tariffs services.
Valérie Hayer, Renew europe’s president, said : “We need to take these barriers down. The European Commission has proposed simplifying existing EU legislation — a welcome step, but only the tip of the iceberg. The real obstacles to the Single Market lie in the Member States: we need to overcome additional licensing requirements for businesses operating across borders, the failure to recognise professional diplomas, and national product regulations layered on top of EU rules." Valérie Hayer Renew Europe MEP, France, Renaissance
Svenja Hahn, Renew europe’s coordinator for the internal market committee : “The real challenge to the EU’s single market lies in the member states. The Commission and member states must tear down existing barriers in the single market, harmonise existing rules and cut red tape where possible. We need to finally create a full single market in key areas, such as energy, services, telecoms, capital, company law, skills, research, and innovation. That way we can strengthen the single market and boost our economy.” Svenja Hahn Renew Europe MEP, Germany, Freie Demokratische Partei
For the next European Council on March 18, Renew Europe calls on national leaders to come up with a list of national barriers to EU internal trade in their own country and commit to remove them. There is no such is as love; only proofs of love. We cannot keep on saying how important the single market and do nothing about it.”
- 2026-03-10 “High time to achieve decent housing for everyone — High time to achieve decent…
Decent, sustainable and affordable housing is a cornerstone of a person's life, the EU's prosperity and competitiveness and social cohesion across the Union. Renew Europe therefore welcomes today's adoption of Parliament's own initiative report to tackle the housing crisis. We have made sure the European Parliament supports measures to make it easier to build, smarter to invest and fairer to access affordable housing across borders.
For Renew Europe, our priorities on how to solve the housing crisis are clear. We are committed to an ambitious and fair housing policy. One that leads to sustainable and affordable houses. One that serves our citizens and leads to social justice and also incentivises markets to building more homes.
Brigitte van den Berg (D66/Netherlands) has negotiated the content on the report on behalf of Renew Europe. She says:
"I believe in a Europe where finding a home is a right, not a privilege. I want a credible housing strategy to set out concrete measures to boost supply so that we can build more. I want it to lower energy bills and achieve our climate goals. And I want it to allow young people to be in charge of their own lives and living conditions. While Europe may not build your house, it can make building houses easier and cheaper. By creating an internal market for production materials, ensuring skilled workers can work anywhere in our Union, and cutting red tape."
One-in-ten urban households in the EU spends over 40 percent of its income on housing. From 2010 until 2025, rents increased by nearly 30 percent and house prices increased by over 60 percent. Meanwhile, building permits for residential properties have fallen by more than 20 percent since 2021, and housing and utility costs surged by around 18 percent in 2022, set against average wage growth of just 4.4 percent.”
